And for those who are newer to the Black Friday and Xmas sales - definitely double your expected budget. This is because bargains somehow keep popping up, sometimes steals you simply feel you cant refuse. You may very well feel your now seemingly meager and carefully selected list didnt account for all this shiny gold thats available.ATS wrote: Tue Aug 23, 2022 2:30 amGood point, I am going to start saving for it!Kalamata Kid wrote: Tue Aug 23, 2022 2:09 am Three months to Black Friday.

I didn't know that. Well, that sucks indeed. Figures that I didn't even install it on my new machine.cthonophonic wrote: Tue Aug 23, 2022 7:30 pm...which is nonsense. People have pointed this out to George several times, to no avail.

That's why it's OK (legally speaking) for discoDSP to sell it. The GPL doesn't prevent someone from building and packaging GPL source code and selling that as a product with whatever terms they want; that's exactly the kind of "commercial use" that is allowed. It only requires that the customer be made aware that the product's source code is GPL and be given access to that source code.cthonophonic wrote: Tue Aug 23, 2022 7:30 pm...which is nonsense. I'm not necessarily saying it's morally OK to just resell stuff you didn't write. But at least from the blurb on discoDSP's site and what I've read on KVR, it seems like this was done in conjunction with the original author, and discoDSP is doing a lot of development and support work, so it doesn't feel like anyone's being cheated here...

Fair enough. I guess I overreached in calling it nonsense, since it's not legally incorrect to say that the *binaries compiled by discoDSP* have a non-commercial use restriction. And you're right, George has put in plenty of work to keep OB-Xd up to date. However, since anyone with a Juce license could compile and distribute an identical plugin without the restriction, it seems like calling the payment a "donation to keep the project going" would be a more honest framing than saying that you're paying to use the software commercially. It's George's right to call it whatever he wants, though.Ceej wrote: Wed Aug 24, 2022 11:09 amThat's why it's OK (legally speaking) for discoDSP to sell it. The discoDSP page for OB-Xd has always seemed a little deceptive to me, though there is now a highlight box around the "free for non-commercial use" section, which I guess is a step up from it being small text at the bottom. OB-Xd being "on sale" through third-party retailers like ADSR just seems like a cash grab, and that's what started this conversation.
I should say that I generally like discoDSP's stuff and bought the whole bundle some years back. But I also share the frustrations that others have expressed about the lack of significant updates and the confusing flurry of changes to upgrade policies a few years ago, which just felt like flailing about for cash without any added value for users. We're now rather far afield from discussion of deals however, and it seems petty to continue, so I'll leave it there.

Just in case anyone had this issue. You need an account with Mastering The Mix to see the license, rather than getting an email with it on. If you have already got it free, set one up with the email you used to buy from them. The serial will show up under your products.
