Subscriptions seem to make companies lose incentive to innovate and listen to customers. Autodesk bought up most of the competition, in some cases just to cancel the applications like XSI Soft Image. Maya is 2200 € per year now, subscription.
Avid and Adobe arent much different.

Perhaps. I have read that about Autodesk before. My anecdata is a mixed bag.

Adobe has made significant improvements to Premiere since it went subscription. Unfortunately for them, DaVinci Resolve is nipping at their heels and made as many if not more improvements using a freemium model. Adobe Audition, I didn't take to it, but from everything I've read it went downhill from the moment Adobe acquired it even prior to subs. Photoshop, I still use CS6 on a perpetual license and still meets all my needs, so I wouldn't know.

Audio community pushback against subscriptions will need to continue in perpetuity. The subscription model as seen through numbers in a spreadsheet is too appealing to the MBA class who run the bigger companies. Looks good on paper ... until you squander decades of goodwill like Waves has done by trying to cram it down your customers' throats.

Twenty or thirty years from now attitudes and understanding about software licenses and lifecycles will be very different than today because younger people now will have had a lifetime of exposure to the problems by then. Just like with backups and poorly timed upgrades, you sometimes only learn through the painful experiences.

The vast majority of my paid software does not provide lifetime free upgrades. Those champion developers who do are so few that I'm sure they're outnumbered by the ones where I paid for a license to abandonware. The other champs are open source developers, and that's where I think we'll see the greatest leap forward over the next decades. To think Linux is only 30 years old roughly and see where it's gone in that time.

The main difference with plugins subscriptions is if you use them and cancel a subscription you can't open your project and have it work the same, and I always have unfinished stuff everywhere and often open a project to remember what plug is behind a certain sound.

It's different for something like Photoshop or GIMP for me because I don't as often go back.

I can confirm this. Because all of the designers, engineers, consultants, and construction contractors (along with all of their subcontractors) on any particular construction project need to communicate seamlessly, there needs to be an error-free standard for electronic drawings/models/documents. (Missing information in construction documents, such as from a slightly imprecise translation between platforms can cost tens of thousands in change orders to fix later.) Unfortunately, Autodesk cornered the market on this 25+ years ago (forcing their proprietary format as the industry standard), and (to nail the coffin shut) bought up most of the innovative design software companies of the early 2000s (Maya, Studio Max, Lightscape, etc.) to eliminate competition. Fortunately, there's no proprietary equivalent to this situation in music/audio production now!

I’ve had a Roland Cloud sub and it’s ok with instruments if you plan ahead. I’m now in the habit of ensuring I keep a separate MIDI track and when I’ve a track in any way finished I’ll render the dry plugin track audio out. You can even take it a step further and sample the instrument with the settings you used either manually or with something like SampleRobot. That lets you potentially edit tracks later with a consistent sound.

Effects are different though, maybe create a track with another plugin or more that is close to what you get from the subbed plugin’s effect settings.

Good lord what a hassle researching the 9 for $99 sale at NI.

1) First I had to list all the expansions on the website. This required 4 or 5 clicks on "show more expansions". I was logged in and had checked "hide owned products" but it didn't hide them all. 2) I had to copy that into a document, which had all the prices and artwork and everything. 3) I had to compare that to a list of expansions that come with Komplete 14 and delete those so I won't duplicate them when I upgrade. 4) I had to compare the list against everything I own in Native access and delete the ones the website said I didn't own even though I do.

That left me with 48 expansions to choose from! I'll probably need until April 17th when the sale ends to research them all. It's a nice problem to have, but sheesh!

Yeah, I think if you use and/or want to own all/most Expansions, it is best to update/upgrade to Komplete Ultimate or Komplete Collector's Edition, as preferred. Otherwise you will need to go through the hassle of reselling the duplicates later on. Komplete updates/upgrades should go on sale in June, however, we will need to see if they offer less than 50% discount this time, which is possible.

That said, if you are not into Komplete and just want the Expansions, this is the best deal. You could even place two or more orders and get even more benefit.
