Thank you Wagtunes!! I've had some music theory. But it can be a tool, or a curse. Sometimes you can think too much and write absolutely nothing. I usually just try to pump something out and it works better that way.
I also know this site isn't looking for songwriting skills, and that's o.k. with me. It's more about what you can accomplish with just one synth. I usually judge on "I wish I could do that." And I also know that some people might listen to what I do and say "I don't wanna do that."
I do have a great time doing this though, and any learning in music is useful. You guys rock!

Hi Steven (aka Wags!),
Thanks for the shoutout - glad you liked my song - yes it does have a 4 bar into! But, you'll be surprised to know I only had a few Saturday mornings of piano lessons when I was 9, in 1959! That's it - didn't really get on at all, so gave it up (parents enrolled me anyway - sort of thing they do eh?). Got into music "production" in the mid-60's at school, basically getting staging right for bands and making sure they used the instrument volume controls and mic usage correctly in order to get a decent front of house sound! Then at Uni got into electronic music, was president of the Electronic Arts Society - we had a Synthi-A! Worked a lot with stunning musicians in the Music Department and learnt from then on - worked with many bands as live mixer and recording guy - almost went "professional" with one band, but they disbanded so it all went pants! Just did more and more music until I am where I am now. I like and understand a lot of music(al) forms (see my OSC's!!!) - have a good ear for harmonic structure (but self trained so to speak).
Am lucky to have a professional musician as a daughter. One day we will get together and write another OSC entry - but she is busy with her tuition business with 60 or so pupils, so gets little time of her own. But, through her I learn a lot - her music degree was in classical saxophone form Leeds College of Music, although most of her professional engagements are in the Jazz/BigBand arena - but also some full orchestra stuff on clarinet or flute (in BIG demand for orchestra rehearsals to "sit in" for absent players at short notice because she is a wonderful ace sightreader!).
So many good entries this month so will be quite happy with my usual halfway point! I just like the one month challenge which makes me learn more and hone my skills more.
Still thinking of an early 60's genre tune for the next OSC - so, will be quite sparse instrumentally, but hopefully it'll all be in the melody, feel and mixing. Watch this space!
Cheers,
dB
PS Loads of tracks to review now - phew it's gonna be hard because I also like to comment along a track - marking points which stand out or where interesting things happen and interest me and my very very old ears!

Just because it's insane doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

Not really. I still can't see it on my computer, either here:bjporter wrote:They didn't add their track to the group, and also posted their profile link, and didn't have proper title, however... I added it:z.prime wrote:Somehow this track made it in to the voting (but it's not in the group?):

I think _A_O_ got the hang of things for next time.

On this one, there is a yellow bar at the top that says account not activated. I click that and it brings me to my soundcloud page, where I don't see anything more about "activating." Wow. Had no idea how difficult this was going to be.
Also, when I go to the voting site, my KVR name and password doesn't get me in. I think another entrant might have that issue too?

Yep. This happens to me every time, too! You hear some "pro" stuff, and it just doesn't even compare to some of these tracks that show up in OSC! You are all wonderful people to be associated with!zippy731 wrote:I sit here humbled by the talent on display here.

OK, I see it there on the voting site. So many tracks, I figure I'll have to download the zip to review them. I don't see mine in there. And still not on front page of this thread.
I posted already briefly about my first attempt to join soundcloud as _A_O_. They kept saying I had to confirm email. When I clicked the link the sent, It just started all over. Confirm email. Time was running short, so I deleted _A_O_ and used JDunn. that worked better apparently. But I guess that is a problem for naming the track by the rules.
I didn't want to cause a disruption. Sorry. If it's going to be creating further issues, I'm ok with bowing out.

OK voted. More 5's than I've ever given before... a real masterclass of synth design and production this month! Well done everyone!
Agree 100%. To me the OSC is just about learning, having fun with pushing synthesis to the absolute limit, and this great community of talented, polite, supportive, and friendly people. And I say that after only having done 3 or 4 entries! I just love the OSC when I have time to do it, and couldn't care less about my actual ranking each time. It's just a pleasure to be here and to learn from such great musicians and producers.z.prime wrote:Yep. This happens to me every time, too!
