... how is mastering any different? Both are 'purely subjective', at least as far as I'm concerned-DuX wrote:What I noticed: v1.45 was distorting things a bit [here at least], when I feed it a sinewave, but v1.46 remedied that and then some. 1.46 is THE version and from now on my go-to EQ plug-in. I've also done some testing with some other LP EQ's and concluded it is really a HQ EQ. The only thing I'm wondering now is - is it the best of them all? There's no Algorithmics EQ demo... and Best means the most transparent, clean sounding EQ for mastering, in my terms. Tracking is a whole lot different than mastering and the percieved quality falls into the "purely subjective territory".
although granted, I see what you mean in that you have more sonic room to move when tracking, as you're not trying to fill up an entire audio spectrum, just a small part of it- but the individual tracks are still quite important I think-

Well, what I meant is: -usually- you don't want to put any "colouring" in, when you're mastering a song. You want everything to be as transparent as possible, but OTOH sometimes colouring audio works well, too
. When I'm tracking, I often look for different colours in an EQ or Compressor, or Distortion... as anybody else, but when I'm done tracking, I don't want any mastering engineer to mess it up too much, cos' I've done that already
, sometimes too much...
.

Well, a GUI for the 4 band wouldn't hurt... especially if done with some taste in colours, not screaming orange, green, yellow...

I think this is going to be a call for Refined Audiometrics, as to whther they want to keep the 4 band basic enough (i.e., no GUI) that it doesn't draw business from their 10 band---business they very much deserve to have. But a GUI for the 4 band would be a nice addition. It can be hard to keep track of everything you're doing with 4 bands going on a host GUI (at least on the bare bones Tracktion GUI).

By the way, I just wanted to say that I think it's really cool how much time and interaction David has put in here working on a freebie for us. It shows that they really care not only about the product but the user as well. His attitude has been great and I really respect him for that. I hope that they develop more tools, and not necessarily free ones.

I Think it's the scene where the soldier tries for the sake of his life not to laugh... - the emperor has got a faulty pronounciation (e.g. 'p' instead of 'b' so it's 'prian') and as he speaks to someone else the soldier chuckles behind his back - the emperor notices it and approaches him to tell him something that contains a lot of names he isn't able to pronounce correctly and then asks 'now do you find this funny?' and continues to speak nonsense in the most hilarious way until finally the soldier explodes of laughter... - I can't remember anymore though what his penalty then is ...
- did I get it about right?

From talking to him by email, I've seen that he has a great love of music and sound and is truly eager to share what he's learned from his years pursuing the study of acoustics and signal processing. His interest goes beyond pure business and is directed at a general desire to contribute to the enrichment of musical artistry.Squish wrote:By the way, I just wanted to say that I think it's really cool how much time and interation David has put in here working on a freebie for us. No, we need a more detailed description.
I guess nuffink is implying that our attitude that Refined Audiometrics' product quality has raised the bar for developers in general is laughable.

Hm,
I think this is the typical fault of prejudice. "Oh, you produce country music? Then you know nothing about synths." Or something similar. This is a poor prejudice.
Some People seem to not understand what RefinedAudiometrics are doing about helping people with damaged ears and then they say "Hey, this is a hoax, blah blah ..."
I don't have damaged ears so I can't tell you if it REALLY works but from the clever theory behind it it's very reasonable to me how their system works.
I surely CAN tell how it sounds when it comes to their FREE equalizer: It sounds great and I don't see the slightest reason to not use it. I've got no technical, moral, ethical, psycho-social or whatever reason against using THIS GREAT FREE EQ!!!
I compared this free 4 band EQ with the Algorithmix EQs which to my knowledge are the state of the art super EQ plugins. You can read my findings in my dedicated thread on this forum. Nuff said.
Best wishes, FRitz

I think this damaged-ear compensation is rather logical. People that have damaged ears and suffer from high-frequency loss in their hearing tend to mix rather shrill and ear-shattering mixes (they compensate while mixing). One can of course learn by listening to references but it would certainly help to hear as well as possible all the frequencies. AFAIK hearing loss is rarely 100% across frequencies unless one has damaged all the hairs on a cell that responds to a certain frequency. It just simply reacts worse and less frequently when there's less of the hairs, hence the needed boost at that frequency to make it react again normally. So, an EQ boost at the problem area would probably.
This is just my speculation that isn't in any way based on hard facts, it's just that I've had a few courses in uni about the workings of the ear and ear damage. I've also measured my own ears trough slow sine sweeps and double checked what the doctor has told me, I have some hearing loss at certain frequencies around 4khz on my left ear. It CAN be boosted so that the mono sine sweep doesn't "wobble" so much or shift image to the right ear.
I'm still of the opinion that it would make no sense to make a hoax out of this.
Cheers!

btw, some peoples reaction in the original thread was very human. One usually tends to dismiss things that don't sound reasonable or things that one doesn't understand, even without investigating it any furter (or showing some patience and see how the project evolves). Hopefully mankind will mature a bit and not be so quick to judge others and their ideas (however that would maybe give the con-artists a field day!). One can be cautious but one doesn't have to be rude. I'm talking to myself too, I'm definately quite quick to throw stones too but I'm trying to learn patience and tolerance!
