maybe this info will make some of you happy :
Steinberg's Christian Dettner wrote:
Cubase 4 does not allow native Side Chaining yet, though all VST3 plugins delivered with Cubase already support that internally (Side Chains are part of the VST3 SDK). Side Chain will be introduced together with the possibility of free Group channel routing (back and forth) within the Cubase 4 generation cycle.

How many instruments do you want?! Don't forget the 30 new plugins and 20 re-worked plugins.

I'd rather have 30 new Instruments or 20 re-worked ones than useless cheap plugins...
i don't care for bundled VST(i)s at all. A host is a host, not a VST(i) bundle...

You might think different if you're doing collaborations or for some other reason have to transfer projects between different computers. Normally I don't need those included plugins either (although some of the new ones look quite promising - let's wait how they sound before dismissing them), but for projects that will be transferred it's not a bad thing to have a broad choice of guaranteed compatible plugs to use during the writing / recording phase. If you keep them for the final mix is up to you in any case.
Another thing is, those new plugs will be the only true VST 3 plugs for at least half a year, meaning they support dynamic CPU load.
VST3 SDK will probably be ready in Q1 or Q2 2007.

looks like:
- Freeze is still utterly useless
- automation is still cumbersome
- sidechaining is still a hassle (and i don't care for promises involving updates)
- do we get per clip FX yet? no? thought so...

guess i'll be having a good look at the competition instead.

@ susiwong: oh, I see...

Only a wild guess :
I suppose we'll see N4 with the mentioned improvements in Winter / Spring 2007 and then Cubase 4.1 getting them one or two months later.
Not based on official info, but that's how Steinberg used to handle releases in the past.

negative as you are about Cubase I wonder why you haven't done the switch already.
You have no right to remain silent!

Or from home preproduction in Cubase to tracking in studio with Nuendo.

SIDECHAINING!!!!!

I can't see that supported anywhere, I could be wrong, but I can't see it at all. If it doesn't have it then I don't think I'll be upgrading.

Another good thing that I once saw, was a wave display based on the energy of a wav. So if you put a full mix up, the bass drums would show up as red, and the lighter sonic energy parts would show up as blue, so you could easily identify the biggest sonic energy parts of a track.

Would help a lot with editing.

Doh.... just read about the upcoming updates, but it really should have been the first thing they sorted :)

i wanted to stay with the app i've used since 1995, that's all... i have no beef with Steinberg/Yamaha, not at all, but i've been disappointed by Cubase eversince SX2, with the ridiculously bad Freeze.

Cubase used to be way ahead of the pack, but nowadays they're famous for badly implemented bells and whistles, instead of innovation.
I just don't get it. It's almost like Apple, once innovative, nowadays strong in marketing gadgety stuff like iMacs and iPods with restricted functionality.

Also, Steinberg has a tradition of censorship and ignoring users' problems and requests. It's like they lost touch, or just don't care IMHO.

A good host should be stable, abundant in functionality, intuitive, and offer a good workflow... not stuff like a Freeze function one should avoid anyway.

I know what he was referring to actually and it's not what you mentioned. Per clip audio effects are realtime effects placed on only 1 clip. Tracktion and Sonar support this and it could come in very useful. I'm also surprised they missed this ... however, come to think of it, I don't think Logic has this feature either.
