Is it a hardware or software synth? Is it analog or digital?

I say Digital. The filter changes seem super automated.

living sounds: you were the most correct. It's a fully digital, early "VA" synthesizer. I say "VA" because the Yamaha AN1x is a very flexible synth that's capable of making far more than analog style sounds, and it's very true that it's hardly the best synth for general analog sounding stuff! For that, I wouldn't choose it usually, but it's not bad at all. If you try a little, you can make some really nice fat sounds like in the first sample I posted. I use it mostly for pretty digital sounds and all kinds of sound effects that it excels at.
It's a great synth for tweakers since it can make a very wide range of sounds.
Its filter has been criticized a lot, but according to this poll's results and comments in the thread, people seem to generally like it. I do have a synth that is digital with an analog filter, the Waldorf microWave, but it's not featured here
.
Interesting facts:
Most people who voted in this thread, feel attacked and want to be left alone.
A very small percent of people were right and voted for the correct, second answer.
I got several nice contradicting opinions
.
Cheers.

That's funny, I wanted to write AN1X down in this thread and restrained myself, changed it to "early VA"!
I never had one, but that's how I imagined it/remembered what I know from demos in the 90s...
There are plugins now which sound a good deal better to my ears... couldn't this thing do some FM, too?

I'm not so sure. Sounds more like Xhip to me.Paulie Phonick wrote:It's Admiral Quality's Poly-Ana. What do I win?
But Poly-Ana has a quality option that lets it disguise itself as [strike]lesser[/strike] er, other synths, so... could be!
When do we get the answer?
