i can indeed take critique, i get plenty of it over time.
i do not however always agree with it.

as to the "rachmiel has training to get away with it..." are you implying that only people who have studied on academic circles should be able to make the kind of things we enjoy making?

how is it you get that I expect you to agree with me? these are my thoughts, just as your music and the rest of it are yours. I don't feel you are listening, is all. if your choice is to create a thing, poot it out there, and not shape it, as if all that amounts to is a polished turd, that's your affair. If it's for you and 6 people who agree, that's great. your remarks on people liking it or not, do suggest strongly that you think too many people liking it amounts to a compromise of your integrity. this is suspect to me.

the latter remark is intended as a kind of needle, an extension of my view in this thread: IMO, the rachmiel version of the ever-popular 6 video games in a laundromat on bad acid with nowhere else to go, is crafted better than the others I'm hearing so far. I know a tiny bit about his background, and compared with what runagate has revealed to me about his, I conclude this qualitative difference (to me, which no one has to agree with), is according to a certain discipline and concentration.

IE., is better crafted.

i think the above is part of the problem, you assume that a comment such as this would be taken as negative.
most people who have been around longer and know me a nit more than yourself(even the people that dislike my stuff with a passion) would tell you that thats the kind of thing i take as a compliment.

its not about integrity, i have no illusions that one style of music is above another, no delusions of grandieur. i have a hand in several genres, ive been involved in prog releases, i am one half of a techtrance type outfit, i play guitar for a friend who writes pop type dittys but doesnt play, i engineer pretty much most things from hip hop through rock through indie, funk, jazz. im part of a production company that is putting on a wide range of acts over the coming months. none of it major label stuff or anything so dont take it as bragging, just a lot of local stuff, i love music, i dont favour one over another except depending on my mood at any given time.

oh geeze lueeze, the problem I think is that you assumed here, that you know what I assume! because it appears that you have categorized me somehow, based on one response to something you made.

I 'assume' people will take it according to their own lights. It makes my point in one throwaway phrase, and it's amusing to me.

I have already granted that I might be in the minority in not preferring "6 video games in a laundromat on bad acid with nowhere else to go", to possibly another entertainment. [have YOU assumed that I prefer not, because it's too challenging? See, I don't know if you have or haven't. I have my suspicions, but I prefer not to project them at this point. I would say, I think you might have assumed this or that; when one says: "you assume" without such a qualification, it reads as a statement of fact. it's problematic to state another's unstated thoughts as such.]

as far as target entertainment for me goes, it's vastly inferior to some other things. because, primarily, I don't like getting a headache.

as an entertainment, for me, it might be superior to, say, a Jessica Simpson release, only because I hate predictable more than a headache sometimes. in some contexts, 6 video games etc is both headache-inducing AND predictable.

as far as considering whether or not it's good "art", gets me into a discussion of craft, which may be right, may be wrong, according to one's own lights.

to sum: to me, it's either unpleasant or pleasant, at an initial stage: As an aural object, does it do something nice for my ear. Then, if it proves to be palpably unpleasant, I wonder what the deal was. I look for shapes, patterns in it, to try and see what I might have missed. IE: I listen for composition. And I don't tend to throw the baby out with the bathwater, I don't think.

It often turns out that, when attention to craft has been attended to, the patterns fall into place, and the 6 video games makes a certain amount of sense, considering the object as a whole.

so, I discriminate. I can even decide if I think it's good or not. which to me, isn't necessarily a false distinction.

I assume you MIGHT take the other view, because you said something very close to it.

EDIT: see, I 'assumed' that you were going for something a whole lot LIKE the ever popular '6 video games in a laundromat on bad acid' effect, and I wasn't trying to insult or stroke you on it. as an object, that's what it is most like in my experience. and, guess what? it didn't surprise me when it cropped up. not at all. not even after the bee trapped inside a poor cow exposition.

is as valid as any critique, outside of a more objective evaluation. I do both.
