sweet! with automation clips this is gonna be even more exciting! I can't wait to make Progressive House with this feature! :D Great work!!! Keep it up!!!!

I can never really make promises because of the part-time nature of this project, but from the state it's in now i'd say a few weeks to a month.

Oh and this first iteration won't let you edit the automation once recorded, other than to re-record new values on top (overdub). It will just be a live knob recording feature, with the option to clear a control's automation for now. Editable curves will come later.

I need to put out a minor update tonight for a graphics bug that affects a bunch of people, so don't get too excited when you see there's an update. It won't have automation just yet...

Hi Rej,

First of all, it's great to see how you take suggestions and keep developing this amazing app.

For MIDI: as a first and simple approach I'd say notes and the 'velocity' (aka the two velocity levels in the drum machine) would be enough.

However, you say that you were thinking about implementing recording automation of eg. filters etc. Not only would this alone be a great feature to have, if one could also export these to MIDI that would be the amazing. For now I wouldn't care too much about midi channels for the automation, you could provide the channels each instrument uses for the automation in a txt file, and one could easily assign those 'by hand' in the DAW. For drums: Yep, I'd suggest using the GM drum map.

Very awesome! Keep up the great work! I love how you take time to listen to the people and their suggestions. This app is by far the best Music making app on Android, and its gonna be huge!!! Cheers ! :D

Hey Andreas, thanks for your input. For the GM drum map, I'd have to map the closest GM drum to whatever the kit drum sample was, but wouldn't you end up re-mapping those too? They probably wouldn't sound close enough to your intended sample. And then what about things like some kits have two snare or kicks ... do you map them to the same GM note ?

I don't think that the GM mapping has to be strict in any way. Just start the the top row where the basedrum sits in the GM maps and then just increase the note numbers as you go. Many drum samplers start at their mappings at the base drum as well so remapping sounds or creating drummaps in the DAW later should be a painless process.

yep, agree, we're dealing with 8 sounds and that shouldn't be too hard to remap later.
If you'd decide to go with the standard GM map, it would look something like BD on C, Snare D1, Closed HH on F#1, Open HH on A#1, HiTom D2, MidTom C2, LowTom A1, Clap D#1 (that's for the 808, though-- The CR78 would need Ride at D2 etc.). But I'm at work now, I took the channels from wiki and can't check against Cubase. This would probably be solid for most samplers.

Ok, cool, that's what I wanted to hear for the drums. I figure as long as the mapping is close and the instruments are mapped to separate keys (starting at BassDrum), it's a not a huge amount of work to re-map 8 of them.

For the controllers (eventually), I'll probably just start mapping from #17 or #65 to avoid the common ones (but map things like "Main Volume" to the right defaults) and provide a remapping list as suggested.

As a synthesis machine, a recording sampler or just the ability to load long pre-recorded tracks ?

Would prefer to record directly in the app like a multitrack recorder - in other words, more like a DAW. But maybe that is asking too much of a phone CPU at this time. Uloops allows for recording in-app but it is loop-based (have to record guitar/vocals in max 4 bar loops) and has to be rendered online so you are using your carrier data plan (if you don't have a wifi connection) which for many of us is not unlimited. It would be great to not have those restrictions.

No, I don't think that's asking too much. Recording live should be possible, with lengths limits for memory considerations. I can see why you'd want to clamp it to something like a 4-bar limit, but I really don't understand why ULoops needs to render their stuff online; either they're being clever by requiring paid subscription plans, or it's sloppy code that doesn't run real-time.

Anyway, no guaranties on timeline, but live recording is on my list, I'll let you know how the testing goes once I get there.

Congratulations! This is very well done. I just saw your app a week before I released G-Stomper, and first of all I got pale-faced :). I really like Caustic, it's definitely a masterpiece of code for android.
Wish you all the best with it and looking forward for future builds.
