I thought I remembered some comment made about the possibility of adding other filter modes in ACE for softer tones, but I might be just completely off my rocker.
Your not off your rocker, the talk of "Diode- ish" filters and adding extra modes definitely happened.

Hmmm, yeah... there's always been the idea of adding new filter modes to ACE. However the "harshness" as compared to e.g. a Minimoog is not directly related to the filters. It's a combination of effects that occurr mostly in conjunction with detuned oscillators. Some of our analogue synths sport the same "harshness", some don't. Usually the more patchable a synth is, the more likely it does not have the "smoothing factors".

Sorry I can't be more precise, we'll offer more insights once we get there :)

Great Ace tutorials, guys! I usually hate video tutorials but these are both snappy and informative: learned a few things without resorting to Red Bull to stay awake... :D

This kind of stuff always makes me feel like a giddy schoolgirl.

Does this mean that Tyrell (and DIVA) will sound "smoother" than ACE/Bazille/Zebra until we "get there" - wherever "there" is?

Well, TyrellN6 already sounds "smoother" than ACE, doesn't he? :)

Which however also means that TyrellN6 sounds a bit, hmmm, "hifi", like Zebra often does.

We'll try to identify the actual causes and then maybe make it an option. Or at least, try to emphasize the effects either way in different combinations of parts.

My eyesight isnt great. I can just read the font on Tyrell, but would be good if someone could make it a bit bolder or something, like on ACE (I use the tuned up white skin)

nice! btw, makes me wonder also if ACE (XL) would get some extra filter models, for instance some of those you are developing for DIVA?

Yes, but probably different ones. The main issue is that the audio rate modulation in ACE/ACE XL requires us to put the whole signal path into a single piece of code. Thus it gets rather complex quickly, hence the more options, the harder to make it all run smoothly.

In DIVA we can process modulations, oscillators and filters separately. Thus it's easy to swap a few modules.

Please please please can you make ACE work properly with Novation Automap as at the moment its pointless wrapping it in the Automap interface. When I change patches ACE doesn't send any signals to automap about the new position of each setting. I've got freeware synths that do this fine but as yet ACE doesnt do it. Its the best sounding soft synth I've heard but I dont use it because its tweakability is severly limited by this.

works nicely in Ableton with a custom Remote User Script, I can control 16 parameters with my keyboard's 8 knobs.

Automap support is pretty high up our priority list for general improvements.

(We currently need a break from all such stuff though... the next few weeks are devoted to analysis of analogue parts...)

I have both, but I haven't actually compared them head to head. Could be educational...

Options! This is one of the things I really like about software synths: the ability to have options that change the character of the "circuit" itself.
