modern production styles demand loudness, and so in this case that we find ourselves in, the best mixes are the ones that are very loud but still sound great.
did you guys know that chris lord-alge sometimes goes over 10dB on the ssl mix buss comp? i'm talking about on the stereo master. in addition to ssl channel compression and all the outboard compressors he patches in.

Has anybody ever really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Just because some famous guy does it doesn't mean that I have to do it
But I'm not a fan of compression in general, so I'm maybe not the right guy for this thread
Cheers

Where do you come up with stuff? & do you think this applies to all comps & all material being used with them?@midnight wrote:modern production styles demand loudness, and so in this case that we find ourselves in, the best mixes are the ones that are very loud but still sound great.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're asking me, or how it relates to the selected text you quoted.Lenticular wrote:Where do you come up with stuff? & do you think this applies to all comps & all material being used with them?@midnight wrote:modern production styles demand loudness, and so in this case that we find ourselves in, the best mixes are the ones that are very loud but still sound great.
What's the question?

Am I the only person that actually *likes* the sound of a well dialed in compressor pushing heavy gain reduction? It can make the sound punchy or smooth or pumping, if you know how to dial in a compressor you can shape the envelope of the signal in many different ways, with predictable results. Downward compression can really make a track come alive, once the proper post-gain has been applied.

I think he is asking where did you learn all this, or is it something you developed over the years?
Not, you are not, but yelling that "modern music" is all about compression is BS. Modern music sounds like pink noise, if you like it go ahead.
If someone can't play a scale up or down, maybe you have to shape the shit out of it.

No. I too can like it but it depends. When I'm listening to some of the early users of "OH MY GOD MY EARS ARE BLEEDING" comp/limiting (ratm kill a man comes to mind) I definitely start thinking compression is bad, k?@midnight wrote:Am I the only person that actually *likes* the sound of a well dialed in compressor pushing heavy gain reduction? No, I'm asking how he makes this stuff up because it's not based on fact. It only reflects his perception of what music should sound like & how a comp should perform to be 'good'.drakem wrote:I think he is asking where did you learn all this, or is it something you developed over the years?

I'm basing it on the fact that modern commercial albums in the rock/electronic/hiphop/etc genres demand a loud record. And I want my own music to be competitive with those records.
Enough of this off-topic stuff - Let's hear this compressor slamming a vocal track, or a drum buss.

Why don't you just try the demo & find out what it really does?@midnight wrote:I'm basing it on the fact that modern commercial albums in the rock/electronic/hiphop/etc genres demand a loud record. And I want my own music to be competitive with those records.

Because I don't want too. I don't plan on buying it anyways, i just wanted someone who has it to slam some drums through it.
Why do I keep getting 3 or 4 people questioning me everytime I post in this thread?
"why dont you do this blah blah blah"
"just because so and so doesnt mean I have too blah blah blah"
what is wrong with you people? how come when i ask for a clip doing heavy gain reduction I get a bunch of trolls on my back. and then when I say I like heavy compression I get more trolls on my back?
