You're not a real EDM producer unless you code your own DAW and instrument, FX plugins from scratch. Not only that but you must also code your own operating system and build your own PC from hand crafted materials. Then you must be sure to provide your own source of electricity from a self built generator powered by cycling on a stationary bicycle. The energy required to cycle your (home made) bike may only come from food (meat, chicken, vegetables and dairy) produced by you on your own hand-built farm.

Nothing wrong with generative methods/tools and ready to use samples/loops.
Architect doesn't need to grow trees for wood and produce all bricks and mortar.
He is a creator of structures, not materials/elements. In fact, he creates a blueprint for
structure, and this structure is actually built by others.
He should know physical properties of wood and bricks, but he doesn't need to produce them
or to know details of production.

This comparison doesn't really work. The problem with the original thing is that it treats a bunch of different types of "cheat" as if they were the same.

You say an architect doesn't need to grow trees, produce everything etc. You're right to a point, this holds up in terms of the farm your own goats sense of "cheating". For loops, it doesn't. The equivalent for that would be an architect using part of the design of someone else's building in their own.

Yeah, the goat thing raised a smile. But as to the point it was also trying to make, and it doesn't work as a counterargument.

If I look around in Munich (or any other big city in the world except Disneyland), most buildings look similar. So architects seem to partly use the work of others. Otherwise every building would look completely unique, and there wouldn't be so many buildings that look the same...

That's cool. I was just pointing out that incorporating someone else's creative idea to realise a creative idea is logically different from using someone else's physical product to realise a creative idea.

I don't buy the cheating argument this thing is opposed to at all, by the way. It's an argument that the whole is just the sum of its parts, and if someone believes that, I feel pretty safe ignoring their judgements on the whole.

truth be told, that can be thought of as cheating more than anything.

i had this lucid dream 10 years ago or so where i was listening to this incredible piece of multi layered music and could focus in on every part with great detail.
even if it just came from my brain, it didn't feel like something i had done, invested sweat and blood into. it totally was cheating.

isn't the really interesting part about creativity that once shit just flows, it can feel like cheating a bit?
