I'm looking to get Excalibur -> Nimbus upgrade from the sale at PB for $29, but my Izotope account doesn't have and won't register my serial/ilok registration for Excalibur. Is it possible to upgrade all the same, or is it a bust unless you have registration for Excalibur/Phoenixverb at Izotope.... How does the upgrade work?

Exponential software doesn’t appear in their licensing areas. Not sure how the upgrades work - best bet is contact them. Or whomever is selling the upgrades.

I made sure to register it to the same iLok location as Phoenixverb. Didn't have to do anything else. Checking that you have Excalibur or Phoenixverb is almost certainly done through iLok.

I don't have R4, but do own R2 and PhoenixVerb. I bought PV on sale as an upgrade path to R2 and mistakenly thought it was merely a cut-down entry level reverb I'd never use. It's actually quite different and I end up using it far more than R2, especially on dry sounds. Its small/medium rooms and chambers are lovely for creating believable ambience. I'm not an expert at reverbs, but to my ears it sounds clean without any strange ringing or metallic artifacts. It doesn't have the lush, modulated swirly tails of R2, but for shorter more realistic reverb I don't need or want them.

Nimbus helps bridge the gap between PV and R2/4. More shaping and control options than PV. If you like PV, look for Nimbus on the cheap (it includes every PV preset as a small part of the overall number of presets).

I paid a LOT more money last year for these reverbs

But Nimbus and R4 are my favorite reverbs, still (along with SonsigA).

I think they could've done a better job with their naming conventions because I've been a little confused myself with how the products are segmented until recently. It would've been a lot clearer if they'd called Nimbus something else, like PhoenixVerb Pro. Since PV is my most used EA reverb the inexpensive crossgrade was worth it. There's a lot more control over the filters, early reflections and tail, along with some clever features like tempo synced pre-delay, tail and even tail compression in busy arrangements. There's considerably more presets as well, expertly made and organized, which I find to be very useful starting points.

What about give it a try by yourself? You are responsible for your needs. And please try reading whole thread not just the last few comments

Because Nimbus does real spaces better than anything else. Of course if that matters to you

I find PhoenixVerb grainy, hard to dail in and not overly realistic. I know the crossgrade is a good price but, as I find myself trying to like PhoenixVerb and continually ending up replacing it with Voxengo CRTIV Reverb, Cinematic Rooms or Lustrous Plates, I dunno.. I think I just have to pass. Actually the Verbum Entropic Hall sale has me much more interested to demo and try. Is Nimbus just PhoenixVerb with extended control?

I do not know if there is a change in algorithm but I never liked Phoenixverb. It was fine but nothing special to use it frequently. With Nimbus it is totally different story. Love it from the day one. To me it sounds much better. It is smooth like butter and add tons of depth without being audible. I feel some kind of luxury in the sound that put it in the same ballpark like PCM Native

OK that's good to know I'm not the only one who wasn't blown away at all by PhoenixVerb. I will try to check Nimbus out before the end of the sale.
