Get any kind of cheapo electric guitar and a TC Aeon, a steal still at £25;

You don't need to be able to play, just hold the thing on the strings near the pickup and fret the note(s) you want on the string in middle and wobble yer finger a bit. Marvellous.

a recent go-to for me has been these "Creative" tools by Orchestral Tools, that start with samples of acoustic instruments and treat them.
There's quite a range in them, from straight, to pitched and stretched way beyond the range (so a /flugelhorn/flute/) to scripted where all of this action, motion, insanity is brought in with the 'variations' controller, like synth/mod wheel.
May come as a surprise, but VSL has some incredible pads material, one whole library is acoustic orch insts as synth (Smart Spheres)
Always been Absynth for the long notes. My long notes in that are the worst resource hogs conceivable so there are a couple of things to relieve that.
Yeah, I do samples as the osc for some of it. cymbal 'sounds like metal breathing'
Equator and Equator 2, again 'electroacoustic' emphasis.
Look for threads with/by Sampleconstruct, or just find on Youtube with a lot of ideas and demonstration.
