BONES wrote: Sun Mar 22, 2026 6:09 am GX80 can't hold a candle to Softube's Model 77 but the thing with the CS-80 is that it's actually a very basic synth, it was its playability that made it popular. I found Cherry's Trident and Quadra terribly underwhelming but maybe the originals were, too? THeir 2600 isn't in the same league as Korg's, either.

The GUI on Dreamsynth put me off instantly, I didn't even bother downloading it (although I think the demo video probably also had something to do with it). It's the workflow in DUNE I dislike, not the UI itself. If they took the layers out of DUNE I'd use it a lot more.
Nice point. I always associate workflow with gui, although related aren't actually the same thing. I missed the distinction.

I have a plan. One can learn Reaper and at the same time go through every Dune 3 patch and reduce them down to one layer. Won't take too long...

On a serious note, Model 77 although warmer in certain regions is different than the GX-80 because it is a GX-1/CS-80 hybrid. I played the patches side by side from both synths (along with yhe CS-80 V and The Eighty) and found the GX-80 the most inspirational because of its creamier nature, personslly.

Teksonik wrote: Sun Mar 22, 2026 11:05 amNot to state the painfully obvious but you can only use one layer in DUNE 3 if that's all you need.
Yeah but you still have to deal with them when working with factory patches, which is a right royal PITA, especially when half the time you can turn all but one layer off and not really notice any difference. It's just that little bit of extra f**king about that makes it easier to use something else.
I'm more concerned about better than easier. DUNE 3 is one of the best sounding synths out there so deciding not to use it because of a "little bit of extra f**king about" seems highly illogical to me but hey you do you.

Any layer in every one of the hundreds and hundreds of patches I've ever made for D3 does something so turning it off will absolutely make a big difference in the overall sound. I use the layers more like individual Oscs because that way they can be Mute/Solo/Volume controlled easier but that's just my workflow.

Anyway I don't want to hijack the thread any further. As for the upcoming Cherry Audio synth there is a good chance that I'll like it but a very high probability not enough to buy it. Time will tell.

I wish CA would do these teasers only a couple of days before release and not ten days before because the speculation gets stale and then minds begin to wander......

AI mentioned PPG Wave and
Ensoniq SQ-80 or ESQ-1. My guess would be the SQ-80 and ESQ-1 combined, but I don't know if they sound like the video offhand.

Then it could be an Oberheim Matrix-6. It has DCOs, “Dawn of Hybrid” would be a good fit, and it’s definitely a true synth gem.

I’d actually be thrilled if someone gave this synth a try. It’s about time.

From the sound in the teaser video, my wild guess is the Akai AX-80. If we take "hybrid" to mean analog synthesis under digital control, that is.

Well, the teaser says 'digital control, analog soul' so....

That would track. DCO/Analog filter.

Nice!

Kawai gives me another idea: the SX-240.

I owned a Matrix 6R. Boy was that one fat sounding synth.

Yeah, I still have my Oberheim hardware too. They're really great synthesizers. If Cherry doesn't dare to take them on, maybe GForce will eventually.

Indeed. It could also be Akai AX80
