wasnt it about music and if we like what we like cause we like it while others say we shouldnt like it though we still do while we think they like the wrong music cause they accuse us to like the wrong music?

Excellent.

So everybody, same time next month then?

First we'll need to start a pro vs. amateur thread, an analogue versus digital thread, and a Fruity versus the world thread, then we can get back to this nerd music.

Right, off to the pub then.
You forgot "tube vs. solid state".

Enjoy yourself. I will be joining you (figuratively) in an hour or so.

This is all very nice and cosy but what about the digs at hip hop and tarnce that keep recurring at KVR?

On the one hand we're told not to make value judgements about 'experimental' or 'ambient' music because the rules don't apply but, boy do they seem to apply to hip hop and tarnce.

I think that everyone is biased and makes judgements about music they don't appreciate. But when those value judgements are posed as if they come from some higher intellectual plane then they are condescending and patronising.

When some people on KVR criticise hip hop they don't mean that they have no appreciation of it but that they see it as musically inferior. This is where I think the double standards lie. :(

Some people seem open minded about listening to music that is classified as 'experimental' or 'ambient' but close minded about listening to 'hip hop' and 'tarnce'. I don't think this is just due to musical preference but is a result of musical snobbery as well.

Where? I keep seeing people saying its happening, but I dont actually seem to see it happening. Yes, I see the 'tarnce' joke but thats it...

Ive certainly seen far more threads started specifically to knock the people doing the experimental stuff, on one ground or another.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

I think every thing here applies as much to hip hop or trance or whatever as it does experimental/ambient/etc. Many equal divergent paths starting from the same source ought to include everything.

To w'rabbyt, if memory serves, try searching the site for variations on 'shit hop'. There was a great one where xoxos laid forth some great ideas on microtonalism and rap, but was met with the usual shit hop brigade.

perhaps more threads may be started specifically to knock the experimental stuff
but there is no denying that there is a tendency to believe hip-hop and trance are inferior around here.
beliefs that are quite obviously held by the same people who cry when someone questions the integrity of experimental and ambient.

the air of musical snobbery munchkin is talking about is very real.
