Bands that could've become true legends, but instead. . ..

My vote is completely for XTC (and Dukes of Stratosphere!). Also, Bill Nelson is on my A-list. He always has a handful of gems in every new bag.

To me, the annals of bands that showed so much promise but did not last long enough/live up to it include the dBs, Guadalcanal Diary,
Dire Straits, and let's not forget Boston.

Oh, and Bill Nelson has far too many gems and wonders to ever make a "woulda/coulda/shoulda" list. He is on my "did it right" list.

Indeed. I guess I meant he should be recognized as a legend, but instead he's mostly known to other musician's.

Yes, Synthpulse, I agree. In a similar vein, I liked the story Mr. Nelson put in his weblog about how someone asked Harold Budd "What kind of music do you do?", to which Mr. Budd replied "the kind nobody likes to buy, apparently". So many great artists do such great work in so much relative anonymity.

God, I hadn't thought of Bill Nelson in ages! What did he do again? It's been so long.

Bill Nelson has been so very prolific, and a great deal of it is simply wonderful stuff. But it's not stuff that's sold mega-copies, and therein lies the rub.

He's recorded more songs than any other musician I can think of. Mostly in his home studio. And he's still at it, creating brilliant works. A genius, if your tastes run towards expiremental pop.

Dire Straits did sell a lot of records, but I put them on the list because artistically they did not keep the quality up. But a good point.

The Jazz Butcher are cult legends. They'd have been massive if there were any justice in the world, and if they had a half decent name.
Same with the Monochrome Set.

Now you're talking...and without turning this into a "great lost (UK) bands of the 80's" thread, can I also mention:tkay77 wrote:...one is "Giant" by The Woodentops
Shriekback
