Maybe it turns out that the magic of the Virus sound can only be achieved by converting to mp3 twice
wise words...

have you ever tried to convert a single saw oscillator to 128kbps mp3-format.

Huge sound degrade. But also some kind of effect. It gets a bit more aggressive. 8)

btw
great trance presets for synths can be found for free on this site:

And why on earth would you want to make one sound like the other?
I think you've missed the best side of the coin here, that being...a versatile/capable synth such as Z2 can sound just about like anything ;)

And... paraphrasing an earlier poster, I'd trust that Zebra could sound more like a Virus then vice versa.

I think one of the reasons could be that, you don't want to purchase every synth in the market that you like the sound of, when you can somehow make that sound (or the character) with something you already have. :)
Peace, my friends. I'm not seeking arguments here. ;)

Don't take it so seriously, it's just for fun. We just want to see if Zebra2 can sound like a Virus. No freudian meaning behind it !

I meant that the demo of the patches have been recorded using a f**k of a lot of extra FXs on top of the synth.. most likely compression, distortion, etc..
So you think Manuel is being misleading then when he says he only used what he did?

BTW - I thought your last clip was rather nice as well

I wouldn't put any money on it either way. His Legacy Collection patches certainly are stuffed full of Legacy Cell candy.. but then again, he does mention it in the description.

the point is not to have everything sound like a Virus, but to understand why a Virus sounds like it does and to hone ones sound design skills

I would love to have my Virus sound like the one in the mp3's !

Lesson 1 : tweaking performance is just as important as a great preset to start with.

at the end I think its still a boring "reference sound" not really worth to get an exact 1:1 100% exact copy of.

I think the main running theme that has become clear through all of this is that Manuel Schleiss is not only a skilled sound designer for the genre he specializes in, but he also knows how to demonstrate his sounds expertly as well to shine them in the best possible light they were intended for. A good photographer knows how to make the light work for them. ;)

There were already some good answers to this but to add my 2 €-cents:

For years we were told that nothing sounds like a Virus. And I think that was right. But now things have changed. There is this little pony with stripes that is capable of nailing the character of such sounds and I like that.
Great is also that Zebra can sound in lots of other really good ways so that it seems to be on it's way to become my main synth. 8)

which does return us to the notion that one needs to develop ones skills and not expect any synth out of the box to sound as good as it can simply by pressing a key.

For this particular sound sequence i prefered JonasNorberg Helix over all, even over the Virus 8) ..
T2 Icarus is a must. SonicCore SCOPE is the most. As heart of studio it has my vote, cause XITE-1 is all she wrote.
