OSCillators... you have to consider that there's a "shape" function on the OSC1. When the OSC is on triangle, you can shape it from triengle into a reverse saw by turning the knob. It shapes all the waveforms, even noise. I find that absolutely sweet. I wish there was modulateable "shape" on both OSCs. :P And yeah, possibly sinewave, and normal saw waveform, or what some call ramp. It could use a little more flexibility, kinda. But due to "shape", which works absolutely fantastic IMO, it is quite good and flexible already.

Speaking of LFO, it could use "shape", too. ;)

Just a little food for thought. :)

edit: Sine usually shapes into a triangle... so a sinewave would bring a bit of confusion in, but how to get all the waveforms - sine, triangle, saw up, saw down, square/pulse with just a few options and a "shape". That is the question. ;) Basically, there should be sine/triangle, saw up/saw down [triangle in the middle], square/pulse, and noise as it is. IMHO

Cheers!

thanks for the updates.

i saw your effects release and you mentioned you had got rid of the oversampling so people could run their DAW at higher sample rates and avoid quality loss of real time downsampling. i think this would be a *great* update for this synth, best of all an option to choose oversampling, ie

NO oversampling
2x
4x

is this planned?

i still rate this synth as better than diva for some sounds, love the tone of the filter :)

cheers!

Not sure how it compares to Diva, as i only demo'd it for a short time (until it ate up my CPU tbh :P), but the oscillators of Charlatan are the fattest i've ever heard on a plugin synth. And the filter, as you said, is among the best i have witnessed so far too, if not the best. Really great job on the sonic side here. :tu:

The downside is that it is oh so limited. But then, that's the design decision of the developer, so there's not much to complain about really, you get what you get. :)

I just tried modulating noise on the first OSC with the LFO, and it doesn't work. it would be a neat trick as not many synths have that.

edit: but many have LFO retrigger on/off. That would be useful and welcome, karrikuh. :)

Thank you, Karrikuh!

and thermal for the link!

how about modulation of patch selection via LFO? that would be
a first in a softsynth AFAIK. think of the sound variation possibilities!!

I've always been a fan of this little guy and Charlatan keeps getting better...

The only requests I have ever had is that there is a separate oscillator for noise - with the option to morph between pink or white noise - so that you don't lose an oscillator when you want to add some noise...

The other request - apart from toning down the "RED" - is to have a chorus option to give it just a little more "width"...

That would make this guy even fatter and it would be a nice simple touch...

I was going to say "phatter",but that word has been banned around here

Thanks to Dominique for a great synth with wonderful character and attitude

I agree with this...

When I mentioned that I programmed some bass sounds on Charlatan that replaced Diva in the bottom end, some people thought I was joking..

I really like Diva but I sold it - and Zebra too....

I found the sound of Zebra to be a little "compressed",where a synth like Z3TA+2 is more open and has more "attitude" for my tastes...

There's too many fan boys jumping on to the "synth of the day" who couldn't program their way out of a paper bag,but the're happy to be moving along with the other sheep...

That's nice for them,but I'm a fan of the under-dogs

Im a fan of quality, doesnt matter if its the underdog or market leader.

Im a fan of my computer's fans. It helps with the tinnitus noise..

Also worth noting is that 'fan' means 'damn' in Swedish.

-Velocity Sensitivity for both envelopes

Care to explain ?

how does it work ? higher velocities make the decay longer on both envelopes ?

I wonder, too, about if it morphs all the parameters, or just one of them. It is an excellent idea to put the additional velocity sliders on envelopes like this. I was just playing with it and I like it very much how it works, but as I said I'm not entirely sure how it works. I'm leaning towards all parameters morphing, though. That would be fabulous as it sounds more natural that way than just making decay longer/shorter. :D

Speaking of making them shorter instead of longer... how about inverted envelopes?
