Can midi VSTs be used with Architect? Or just Instruments and Effects?
Yes: it supports MIDI out from plug-ins .
FYI, I'm aware there was a 'suggest a name' competition for a free license when !Epoch (Architect) was released ... so when I did a forum search to see who the lucky winner is, I see that it is a user who has disappeared for quite some time. In fact there are threads about him with people worried because they can't contact him.

I hope he's well ... but maybe you should consider giving the still active followers of this monumental development another crack at the prize
That seems sensible. I will try to track down the original suggester. Otherwise, usernames in a hat, I guess.
Just to know, will this beast be compatible with trusty (Ubuntu 14.04) or should I be prepared to switch to something more recent based on 16.04 (Xenial)?
It's compiled against 10.10, but with a recent GCC. Anything with a glibc newer than what was current back then - I would need to check to confirm the exact version - and you'll be fine. You'll be fine with 14.04.
Architect, the modular MIDI toolkit, beta now available for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

gonna be weird calling !Epoch "Architect"
I guess I can get used to it :)

I remember reading something similar a couple of years ago. With a comment like that you expect it to be released around new year or shortly after. Its hard to understand why it would take years.

I think he's going by the Islamic calendar, Gregorian 2018 is Hijri 1439/1440 depending which of our months you take it from.

So almost another 600 years till release :P

If nothing else, you have to admire Colin's determination and persistence

Perhaps the ! could be moved to the end, so it's called Architect!? That would maybe ease the transition (and express our excitement) :)

Have a peaceful (and somewhat productive) holiday season, Colin!

I really hope this is cheap, because it passed relevance a long time ago, like i say, I am already running Euclidean sequencers and such as plugins on IOS for £10 (Brambos Rozetta collection)
In its first couple of years this looked immense.
No disrespect mean't here by the way, I own everything by Loomer, but with no audio tracks, no clip launching etc etc, this looks dated already.

Finally, a 'readable' design that unites different midi tools into one polished product. I like the pages and multiple windows; the variety of midi generation approaches including Pd/Max type graphs, scripting and tuple; and I hope Variables is similar to Scripter or Noatikl. I am curious what it reports to a host, but we will all find out soon enough. Congratulations!
