In Bitwig I can do exactly the same, combine nested layers/splits and save the whole pack as preset... Why not 55 instances of different plugins (not that I tried that many...)
Advantage of unify is, that you could move that preset to another DAW...

And I can do the same thing in Reaper. However, I wouldn't because it's tedious and not/very transportable. The beauty of Unify is it makes doing this easy and easily reusable in other projects. The only place I'd bother with layering is in synths that are designed for it (eg. Rapid, Vengance, Falcon etc). With Unify my plugins become modules in the Unify workflow. Anyway, for me I wouldn't bother with doing this in my daw but Unify makes it easy and fun to layer plugins and sounds and for me it's opening up a lot more possibilities. If it's not for you, great. I am just calling it out because for me the power I am realizing in Unify wasn't immediately obvious.Tj Shredder wrote: Mon Jan 18, 2021 8:09 pm In Bitwig I can do exactly the same, combine nested layers/splits and save the whole pack as preset... It's really a great product.

I can always add one project to another and get the same result. This seems like a lot of extra effort to me, not less effort.
The simpler you keep everything, the easier it is to refine and improve it all. That's why the longer I've been doing this, the simpler my projects have become. I reckon our next album will probably use less than half the number of plugins we used in our 2016 album, which would be about two-thirds of what we used in the last one. That's not just because I get better at doing this over time but also because the plugins have got so much better than they used to be, so they don't need as much help.
I never layer anything so no need to go into any detail, but thanks for offering to.plexuss wrote: Mon Jan 18, 2021 3:22 pmThere are many reasons why, for me, Unify blows away a daw for layering. I wont go into all the details unless you want.
What would you use that for? That's three or four times more plugins than I will use on an entire song. I can't imagine any way you could need all that just for one part and I certainly can't see it as something you would want to re-use, so having it all as a single preset seems pointless to me, unless you are an unscrupulous sound designer wanting to flog useless krap to people who don't know any better. For example I just put together a Unify patch that has 55 plugins working as one instrument. it includes 5 Plasmonics, 4 Knifoniums, Boz's new El Clapo and Das Boot, Microtonic a couple factory presets, all with instruments and buss effects.
You're describing a DAW, only a DAW is capable of also containing all the MIDI that goes with the sounds.I feel Unify brings new life into plugins because it provides an easy to use, transportable, high performance framework for laying plugins you already own - I at least find it's breathing new life/capabilities I didn't have before because it was otherwise tedious to do. YMMV
How often do you re-use parts? I never really re-use anything. Even when I start with the same patch, which I often do, there are always lots of tweak required to make it work in a different context. By the time it's working in a new project, it always sounds quite different.plexuss wrote: Mon Jan 18, 2021 8:17 pmThe beauty of Unify is it makes doing this easy and easily reusable in other projects.
Sorry, I don't see the difference. All I see is you making things much harder to tweak, by hiding too much away where it's harder to get at, which in turn means you are less likely to bother at all, which means you'll settle for "good enough", instead of "as good as possible".With Unify my plugins become modules in the Unify workflow.

So it's more like a template, a way to load a standard set of instruments you can then sequence?

I wonder why you guys discuss Unify in a Knifonium thread. I mean, nothing wrong with a bit of offtopic, but, this seems to be going on for quite a few posts now...
I'm sure there is a dedicated Unify thread.
Edit: Found it: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=535636&p=7592718&hi ... y#p7592718

The Unify discussion was on-topic. So, just don't read it if you have no interest in Unify. I am sure we'll be done talking about it soon.waltercruz wrote: Tue Jan 19, 2021 11:45 pmwell, we are talking about Knifonium unified patches...chk071 wrote: Tue Jan 19, 2021 10:48 pm I wonder why you guys discuss Unify in a Knifonium thread. I like to use knifonium the same way inside of patchwork. It layers well with itself, especially for pads. Running a multiband plugin after each instance then soloing the bands can create some interesting sounds as well, basically turning it into a multiband plugin...however you can then run any 3rd party effects after each instance or band. I imagine the same can be done with Unify. There are some soft synths for whatever reasons just don’t blend the same way as knifonium does though.

... that is what sold me on Knifonium - Unify. On it's own Knifonium, although nice, was not at a price I could justify taking into account my other synths. But with Unify it takes on a whole new paradigm! Yes I know you can do the layering in the daw, I just don't use the daw that way. For me using Unify feels more natural and as you said Knifonium sounds great layered with itself!tylerdedera wrote: Wed Jan 20, 2021 12:32 am I like to use knifonium the same way inside of patchwork. Really? You couldn't find much use for Knifonium on it's own? I'd need to layer just about any other synth to try and match Knifonium but it's the last synth I own that I'd think needed layering. It's absolutely massive al on its own.
What difference does it make? It grew out of the discussion and, in context, is perfectly reasonable. It's your post that's contributing nothing to the topic.chk071 wrote: Tue Jan 19, 2021 10:48 pm I wonder why you guys discuss Unify in a Knifonium thread. Yeah, Unify is of no use to me since I use Bitwig which is amazing for layering stuff... all the modulation, the workflow, the macros, preset pages, etc etc. Plus Bitwig has an excellent preset system. Unify would just be an extra layer of complexity that didn't do things as effectively as my DAW.Tj Shredder wrote: Mon Jan 18, 2021 12:58 pm A DAW like Bitwig for example would make Unify obsolete.
The whole concept is made for sound designers who want to create layered sound sets and be able to sell them... That is also why the love free synths...

So, finally at a price I am happy to pay ($39 with code KNIF-3999 today) so I have picked it up- its been a long time since I demoed it (when it first came out!) but glad to finally have it. I don't 'need' it, but when the price is right it seems rude not to have it
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!
