small update to the above textures. All the images are from cgtextures.com. I adjusted them for use in Skinman and saved them to grayscale .bmp. I'm sure many of you have already done these types of things with cgtextures.com and else where but for some it might help that its already done for them.

The import and export from the library is very useful in working with smaller elements and then adding them in a final image, however I am finding that its moves things around a bit at times when I load it and then try to adjust to where I needs.

I have also been having problem adjusting the size of primatives by entering in a numeric amount. it stop working at 99.

I;ve been trying to do a GUI complete only using Skinman and Knobman (although its been hard not just grab PSD as I'm more accustomed to it). I have 5 possible GUI's they are similar of course slight changes in color to various decorations. I don't know which of them I like but mostly I feel like there is something missing or not quite right yet and I can't pin point it, maybe its just the colors or the style of it I don't know its feels dull to me and need something to give that...you know that 'somehting'. So if anyone wants to take a look and maybe help me come up with that unique twist that makes it... :) .... I put up some screenshots on my photobucket account here:

just click on the images and it will zoom in and you'll see the arrows to scroll through them. you can go the main window to get the full size images.

In terms of colours, I favour Nos 2 and 5, just vecause of the contrast of the background to the panels - they are much easier to see, and in use I would find it more easy to navigate. There's a lot crammed in there, but it looks quite well organised.. :shrug: :)

Of course you can make animated gifs in Photoshop, Hils just hasn't found the tool yet... It's called the animation palette. It bugged me after I posted those free gif animator links the other day. Up to CS2 (I have 7) the tool is in a separate bundled app called ImageReady. in CS3 it is reportedely included in Photoshop directly.

And btw free Corel PSP X (not including Animation Shop from the earlier Jasc versions) in case anyone is interested :

Yes, you are correct in CS3 you go to save for web & other devices and just save it as a .gif. I have only used that option to save single images I never realized that I could use that for animations as well, so simple its beautiful. :)

Although my UI's are quite dull...
I like the second one best because of the color. I always like a bit of lightning variation (top to bottom)so the controls stand out a bit more.

Is it possile to align the effects section to the right. t feels a bit like a 'lost space' (bottom right).

About the "something": I miss something at the sides of the design - some wood or metal side plates perhaps? See the microKORG or Bombass (acidlab.de) for reference.

BTW: your Doepfer knobset is still so nice :).

I changed it up some still working on it. I don't know about side panels I was really trying to avoid it. But that extra space is really annoying me as well. I was going to put the vol and pan there but put it up top instead. I might just redo the fx section so its longer to fill that space. add the current image to the same link.

#6 is very nice. Putting the matrix at the bottom makes the design more balanced I guess. "Side plates" could also be as small as the "wood-style" part between the synth and the top of the design where the presets are. Don't know if it will work... If volume/pan won't work - maybe resizing the sequencer will do the trick? Make the seq as large as the filter and the effects as the lfo? Very semmetrical.. maybe too much? :)

I have a question I hope that will be easy enough to answer, I just need to check before I go and adjust things and potentially lose information. Is it necessary to include .png images used when sharing .skin and .knob files? It seems to me that I don't need to store the files, meaning I can remove the .png files and just keep the .psd source file and I don't have to worry about information being lost when people open the .knob and .skin files. Is this the case?

Also I have been posting full skins on my blog I am now thinking that is a stupid idea, what might be more useful and serve a better purpose it to store all the various blocks of primitives as .sklib files so they could just be dropped into a working canvas without much trouble. Would this be a better way to go? Perhaps that would also allow us to share more Skinman stuff as well.

I did make the sequencer as large as the filter area. I also changed up the readout areas which I felt gave that bit of life I was looking for. I didn't like side panels (it was distracting). Overall it's a really simple GUI; end amount of images is 47 which include 5 different colors for the main area so it's really only 43.

My only complaint is the properties menu needs to be redesigned. It is extremely frustrating scrolling up & down to get to parameters, I would have also liked a layer FX menu so I could create my primitive and just select a pre-determined layer FX or save small changes and have the option of coming back to some other version latter one, spent a good deal of time trying to recreate things I had changed and wanted back latter on. Perhaps a clear layer FX as well so that I don't have to reset every parameter by hand, perhaps that is already there but I couldn't find it.

I also found it difficult using the tree. I place thing inside of layers removing the fill and treating it as a folder to help keep things organized, however with no visual distinction between things I would easily lose track of what was a folder and the actual layers. It only become increasingly difficult as the the GUI progressed although simple it maybe it has over 200 layers. Over 50 layers with no visual cues on the tree itself it very difficult knowing where I was or was trying to get to even with extremely careful labels so it was stressing. And pink was driving me crazy :)

I could not resist to use some (modified) elements of Hlis to do something:

This will be a chorus (again), based on a Roland design with 4 delay lines.
Needs some finetuning, will be on my website in some days.
Basic version shown will be free. Pro version with more controls (for stereo width etc.) maybe 10 Euro donation (if Hlis has no problems with this - his name will be mentioned of course).

Here's a skin I've created for Poise drum sampler based on the MPC2500.

I used a combination of CS3 and Knobman for the actual graphics. I had to google for a few reference shots haha.

Check out Poise for some seriously quick and easy drum sampling! :)
