What synth do you actually USE the most in your own music????

VST, AU, AAX, CLAP, etc. Plugin Virtual Instruments Discussion

I don’t have a go-to. I mean, I use a lot of synths over and over, but I also force myself to specifically get out of my comfort zone. I find it useful. So, if I’m in the mood for an FM synth, I have a handful that I’ll go to. Most recently I used Nemesis on a project, but it literally was because I thought, “I haven’t used Nemesis for a while.” I find it fun to make myself struggle a bit. I just picked up F’em for $29 because I’ve still got a lot of work that an FM synth is perfect for, and I think it’ll also make it fun to explore a new instrument at the same time. I also use VCV Rack a lot to make my own custom instruments.

Of course, if I had to, I could probably make all my music from 4-5 plugins, but since I don’t really see a reason to give myself an artificial limitation, I just go for whatever seems fun to explore.

No, scalable-high res GUI.

But what I'm curious is what synth people actually use the most in real productions they do

As of late, I'd say U-He Hive is my most used synth. Used to be FM8 and Massive. It's kind of my FM8 replacement because just like NI's classic software synthesizer, Hive is low CPU and sounds great. It's fast to dial in new sounds, has a good sequencing capabilities, and ultimately is aesthetically pleasing on the eye just like NI's stuff. You can plop 20 instances of it down easily so it's a no brainer to throw it in when for sounds when you don't want to overload the CPU. I think it also actually sounds better than Zebra despite being supposedly lower CPU and less "flagship."
I've had this thing for like 6 hours....but I'm telling you right now Diva would get destroyed. Literally. I mean no offense to URS and his team. They make a great product. Great interaction and great support. That's why I support them.

But the library that came with it wasn't my PERSONAL taste. I'm not quite sure what the presets were made to sound like or who it was marketed to.

Anyway, I'm gonna upload some sounds soon. May even upload a video to our production channel .....if it still works :hihi: :hihi:

I don't remember the GUI ever changing in any major way. It's large enough for me though. They could have added resizing and I just forgot about it.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

Using Reaktor a lot actually. Although other NI synths often find their way into productions too. Surprisingly, Massive, good old classic, and Absynth began competing for a place of a go-to synth. Don't own any fancy new synths.

This is how it looks for me (with Tonica skin, zoom 150%), 2560x1440, 27":

Is it the largest size? Does it have 200%? Beautiful skin, btw.

Not really a synth, but lots of synth presets in kontakt instruments really fit me. And The Prince sounds great too (also not really a synth)

Yes, 200% is the largest zoom option.

For me it's definitely Serum since it's so versatile. If I didn't already have a Serum license I would've gone with Vital as it's on-par for me but since I'm already used to Serum anyway that's what I use most.

I've noticed that using a lot of instances of the same synth can have a negative impact on my mixes though. Because I have a specific workflow for each synth and they have default settings that I may not change and unique algorithms for their FX etc. Lets say I add 5 instances of Nexus, they all have that same reverb sound and instead of making it coherent it actually just builds up and makes the track muddy. Same if you use that same multiband compression in all of your Serum patches or the same Distortion types, especially if you use pre/post mode and keep the default settings because they will all get a resonant peak at the same cutoff value etc. If I use multiple synths they all have their own character that fills up the mix if that makes sense.

Or maybe I'm wrong and it's all just in my head! I'm curious to know if other people experience this too.

Oh, sorry no.
There’s absolutely no reason to report this post. Sorry again for this mistake.
So I’m going to report mine instead.

lately I'm thinking VPS Avenger is my favorite soft synth that I own. I've had it for 4 years or so and never really grasped why it was so loved until lately, particularly the sequences feature and all the routing options so easily put together. it might be the first synth that I actually buy add on material for, because the presets are phenomenal. beyond that its so well designed for most things you can think of. i think it is easily going to become my primary synth for most jobs.

besides that, i usually reach for Omnisphere now when I need to just find some great sound. I tend to use Omnisphere more as a rompler preset machine but I should use it for other things too. really, Omni and VPS are very similar.
