Vman88,

How about the mic pre-amp section? It looks like you can DI the 1/4" inputs, but what about the XLR inputs? Also, do you see any tech specs in the manual about the Mic pre-amp section? If so, please share them here.

The XLR inputs are selected in the gearbox program, and you select your preamp model from there. I have not found a way to get a true direct input (i.e., bypassing gearbox) but as I stated before, it really is not an issue for me to get a clean input. I use the avalon preamp for that, as it is the most transparent. Unfortunately, there are no specs to be found on the disc. I had a look in the help section in the line6 folder in windows explorer and it doesn't state anything technical. As I said before, any preamp you buy will have some coloration to it, so being able to control that coloration with the models, to me, is far more versatile than being tied down to the one sound you would get in another preamp. Now, I know you might say that the device is coloring it twice, once with the hardware, and once with the model. But let me assure you guys, the clean you get with this, if properly setup, is the cleanest I have gotten with any mic preamp. I have a yamaha mg mixer, and an m-audio mobile pre, and the clean sound I setup with the line6 preamps is CLEANER than both of those. Hope this helps :)

I was playing with the vocal preamps earlier today - with a vocal patch selected you can set 'pre model' to 'no amp' and then as long as you have not got any of the fx modules switched on then I'm assuming this gets you your 'straight through' signal.

I'm only a bedroom duffer but I have found the 'bright and clean' preset to be just that. Since owning the UX2 is the first time I ave been able to record my own vocal and by golly can I NOT sing

That does help. Maybe the Line6 is back in the running for me. I just wish the tech support guy that bantered with me for over 2 weeks knew what he was talking about.

It really is a good investment. If you get any other preamp, you don't get all the models, and most of them are stunning. The Neve/Api models are incredible, you really can HEAR a difference. Puts most of the analog modeling plugs to shame. I was concerned myself about the lack of bypass, but in the end, I un-installed my emu1212m. It is that good. Plus, customtone dot com is back up, and you can download hundreds of tones for free...I am going to be busy with this thing for a LOOOONG time (in a good way!) Let us know how it turns out for ya 8)

That's me sold. ;) Just have to wait for Christmas, though...my g/f is likely to get it for me.

I wonder how the preamp models would sound if you run a full mix through them. Any word on that from your experience or the forums?

I wondered this - not tried it though as I then decided that as a T user FinalMix was less faff and more powerful

Oh, definitely. But going through one of the preamp models wouldn't necessarily be for EQ and dynamics control (which is what FinalMix is intended for), it could just be used to give a simulated analog character to a recording. Wouldn't be useful if the preamp model is too heavy-handed, but then again, lots of people like TRacks, which is pretty heavy indeed.

When I get the UX2, I'll be sure to give'er a go. ;)

Well you bring up a good point, some of the models are colored pretty heavily, but there are ones, like the Avalon, that are transparent, and with a bit of tweaking (setting everything flat and adjusting the input drive)it is as clean as I have ever heard. But I think that the coloration is something that is desired. The fact that you can really discern a difference when A/B'ing the models is nice for a change. I grew tired of all the plugs claiming to add the character of Neve, etc, and you could barely tell anything, almost like it was a placebo effect. The preamp models are incredible...wait until you roll through the presets and hear the wide variety of tonal colorings. Once you set your clean input, save as a preset and you are done. You won't be disappointed Greg :)As for running the full mix through, that is an interesting notion...I will have to try that out.

Is there separate processing for each of the inputs. Could I for e.g. have 2 vocalists and 2 guitarists being processed differently at the same time. Or is it just for situations like to mics or guitars but the same processing?

Thanks. It seems only stereo or 2 channel. Not bad I guess.

I'm really happy with mine, I have done live stereo recordings with my laptop. Its my main sound card at home. You can hear some scratch track made with it here www.myspace.com/ptho these are just songs in progress, but the vocals, guitar and bass were recorded using the Gearbox software that comes with it.
Drums were done in Reason.

Thanks for the link. Any examples of how this sounds are useful.

I'm sorry I don't understand the question.
