To judge from some of the replies in this thread, many KVR members seem to have more than a little sympathy with warez users. This is deeply shocking to all honest users of software.

Let's be quite clear about this.
What I suggest is that rather than risk infection by exploring trojan-ridden Internet warez sites, why not start our investigations right here at KVR. There seem to be plenty of members with HIGHLY SUSPECT attitudes. What's the betting that many of them are using ILLEGAL CRACKED SOFTWARE?
Let's make a list of everyone who posts in threads like this saying that it's okay to use warez, everyone does it, software costs too much, etc - you know the tired old excuses.
Warez use seems to be like drug use. I've read that many CRIMINAL warez users download hundreds of programs they'll never even use. It's an addiction, just like crack cocaine. But it's WORSE than crack cocaine because addicts only harm themselves and they deserve all they get. Warez users harm EVERYONE by forcing hard-pressed companies like Steinberg to invest millions on dollars in copy-protection thus making software more expensive for HONEST users.
You're right, WilliamK, something needs to be done RIGHT NOW!
Here's my suggestion. We'll search the KVR archives for members who've made posts sympathetic to warez use and put them on a blacklist of unsound members.
Whenever one of the blacklisted members posts here asking for feedback or help of any kind, we'll immediately post to the thread informing everyone that they're a blacklisted warez-sympathiser (and probable warez user) and are not to be given any help, feedback, whatever.
Any member who ignores our request will be immediatel added to the blacklist.
The blacklist will also be sent to all major audio software developers, the BSA, FBI, NSA and Interpol, so they can instigate their own investigations concerning the ILLEGAL content of the blacklistees' hard-drives.
Where their place of work is known, we can also contact their employers and inform them of their employee's sympathy with warez. Hopefully they'll soon be looking for another job!
If they have websites, we can contact the ISPs to have them removed.
Policing, like charity, should begin at home, so let's clean up KVR and get rid of all the warez kiddies so that it's a fit place for honest, upright men like you and me.
BTW, it's good that you broke off relations with your thieving cousin, but you don't say whether you reported him to the police? I sure hope so. I reckon a ten-year stretch is about the right medicine for low-down scum like that.

I'm going to start searching the archives right now. Do you think we should form a committee, Bill? Some sort of organisation? How about a name?

Whilst I disapprove of Warez and the people that proliferate it, I cannot see that the actions detailed here would have any impact whatsoever. This isn't a defeatist attitude but the problem is way bigger than any campaign we could muster to combat it.
You will never irradicate warez because there will always be someone who can crack the stuff and the internet is the ideal delivery system. Companies will have to think of smarter ways to combat it. We are seeing more "clever" methods being employed, with companies making warez less appealing by introducing better packages, demos and support.
To excommunicate a family member is a bit extreme IMHO. I'd rather spend time educating the individual as to what the real impact of using warez is. Don't just tell them it's bad and wrong, but show them a family torn apart because the main earner has been laid off because his company can no longer afford to pay him due to massive drops in sales. Show him the results of a suicide bomb campaign that was funded by organisations selling warez illegally. Family is too precious to disown like that.
Indiscriminate witchhunts help no-one and achieve very little, if not the opposite of the original objective. Just ask Joseph McCarthy

It surprises me that several people 'here' are prepared to not only sever link's with a family relation over this issue but are also talking about reporting them to the authorities.
Just out of curiosity - what other transgression's of the law or for that fact misguided behaviour might 'you' disown your relation and report them to these so called authorities, if this was a 'green' board I suppose 'you' might be talking about the same treatment for a relative who does not utilize the recycle bag's to their full potential or maybe if 'they' regularly litter?
Perhaps I missed something but where does the EDUCATION of people come into this?
In my experience (15 years) of working with offenders if you just throw the book at someone you simply get a short term effect - IE. a fine or 3 months in a detention centre or whatever - EDUCATE someone, connect with them, show them an alternative way of thinking by example and you might make a longer term impact on their behaviour.
But then again, that is like hard work ... for some, it involves thinking and not being judgemental - at least not to the point where it get's in the way of EDUCATING someone.

What do you people, in general, think about "try-before-you-buy"? There are many more people than we'd like to think that download cracked applications, use them for a while, and if they like it, buy it and/or save up for it.
Personally, I do it with movies and CDs nowadays. If I hear about a CD or movie that interests me, I download it first, watch it, and if I like it, I go and buy it. For example, I bought Pulp Fiction after downloading it, I didn't buy Van Helsing because I hated it, and on Monday I'm buying Robert Miles - Organik because I downloaded it and liked it.
The original purpose for Warez was to try something for a while to see if it was good, then buy it for the support. Its just that too many people started abusing it. Companies invest more and more time to create "foolproof anti-piracy systems", and time and time again they get broken. Even the latest Cubarse and the latest Sonar are all available for download.
Since the recent Sony thing, downloading music might have another benefit - own the CD for the legality of it but never actually use it to keep your computer clean, just use the high quality mp3s that somebody else went through the trouble to make for the public.

By that rationale the Cold War was a great idea. Or the Red Scare in the 20-50's. How did those turn out? Not so well huh?

Actually, the *original* purpose of Warez is the way they get created, not the way they are used. It's about the cracker showing of his skills to his scene. It's exactly the same as graffiti: You tag something to show: "see! I'm cool enough to climb this building/train in he middle of the night and write my name on it."
Nowadays I don't think this sounds very smart either, but this was a different story when I was 15 and actually did crack the occasional C64 game. I just hope it's time-barred now or Williams gonna get me...

What a bunch of sillies. Have any of you ever actually fought a pirate in real life? It's a lot harder than it looks and most often deadly. Don't think that just because they have one eye that they cant sword fight very well, because they still can. Also, WHich would you use more in a fight. A badass hook, or a boring ass regular hand?
