After about 20 minutes of tweaking I came up with this preset for marquis. Ironically, I couldn't get even close to the original SSL clip with T3 mode but T1 mode in Feedback gets pretty damn close.
Cheers!

Sorry, been in the studio and the phone ran out of battery power. I'll give you a call in 15 minutes. Chill!Kingston wrote:bmanic you could answer your damn phone! quite difficult to reach you thru KVR.

My preset with T1 mode uses a release of about 40ms and works great as the third Shape control is set to be very 'slow'. This creates the illusion of long release. I simply love those 3 knobs, you can make marquis sound like nearly any compressor!

Good job in modeling the sound but it still is quite some bit away. Listen to the two bass-kicks on the beginning of the 3rd quarter (bum tschak bum bum). The bum bum is soft and round and not so punchy and clear. It still is not that pro-sound, the SSL creates.bmanic wrote:After about 20 minutes of tweaking I came up with this preset for marquis. I'm quite surprised, how bad Waves emulated the sound (example 2 of the clips) compared to the URS1980. URS1980 ist the thing.

Here's what I've got finally (had to change a couple of math ops in the T3 algorithm, though):
http://www.voxengo.com/temp/VoxengoMarq ... _setup.exe
And the according preset is here:
http://www.voxengo.com/temp/SSL_Real.fxp
It's as close as it can get I suppose (tweak attack and release for better match). Hopefully it's not better than Waves or UAD, or their approach will not be looking serious.

Well, the example bmanic posted, is already classes better than the Waves example, so i'm afraid you're not that wrong...

Now it's possible to get closer with T3 mode but like Barbarossa said, the kick drum still doesn't come trough in the right way. Not that I really care as I seem to like the sound of marquis more than the real SSL.
In the blind test I even seemed to like the waves the most but it's hard to say what is truly good as the compression was exaggerated on purpose which made the "full mix" example pump in a bad way on all except the waves example. I do remeber that I liked the real SSL 4000 consoles bus compressor but only when the gain reduction needle barely moved! (had it on fastest attack and autorelease, ratio 2:1). This provided excellent "glue" to a mix.
Cheers!

Ah, there may be a difference.. Forgot to mention, that T3 mode in Marquis was approximated from SSL Mixbus Compressor (from SSL4044E desk) - moreover, not the exact schematic was analyzed, but a replica done by DIY engineer.
Of course, original schematics may be available for SSL engineers only. So, I guess I may simply not be able to replicate what URS and Waves replicated after all.
BTW, if anyone knows Gates Sta-Level compressor, I have a model of this one as well.
