Is there an effect plugin capable of imitating holophony?

To me it seems as if a surround setup should be more capable to give that holophonic experience? Are there plugins for surround that do "the trick" sufficiently?

It's probably safe to say "more capable," but even closer to the idea are results from those working in ambisonics, starting with Michael Gerzon. At this time, ambisonics is not very practical, but theoretically it is quite intersting.

Yes, I'm only theoretically interested in such things that I can't play back on my stereo. I will have to stay then with the HRTF stuff and related techniques.
