You have been assimilated. I used Cakewalk for much of my natural life. Two years ago I bought PT M-powered and didn't get on with it much. Then I finally bought Cubase Studio 4, and it had everything already, plus VSTs work without issue.

I predicted the end of Steinberg when they were being bought and sold here and there, but with Yamaha they seem to have found their footing. They really seem to have it together.

Upgraded to Cubase 5 and so far so good.

A similar path indeed, soulata :D

And yes - feedback on HSO please!

Speaking of which, a full sampler seems to be the main thing missing in C5. Is HaLion 3 a good option, is there a HaLion 4 on the horizon, and are there benefits to using Steinberg stuff together?

Post

I much prefer Kontakt 3.

Halion hasn't been updated for quite some time.

well apart from err about a week ago when it went full 64 bit

Halion 4 for 2010 though, at least according to people at cubarse.net
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Post

ok.

Which reminds me, Kontakt 3.5 should be 64 bit compatible. Anytime now ... yeah right ...

Anyway, I still find Kontakt 3 much more pleasant to use than Halion 3 (which I only tried at
a friend's little studio, truth be told). I had Halion Player for quite some time, bought on a whim because of the good marks it got from SOS. Well, let's say it wasn't for me.

Well of course I can use NN-XT and/or Ableton's Sampler via rewire anyway, so no hurry to buy anything else right now.

(I also bought PianoTeq 3.0 in my end of year expenses rush! - awesome).

I just had my first Cubase problem -

* I tried to open the programme and it threw up an error message. Something about DCOM and not connecting successfully to the dongle.
* It ignored further attempts to open Cubase until I did a reboot.
* Then I had same problem again.
* I tried to open the License Control Centre application which also froze.
* After second reboot I went to the licence control centre application first, which after a few moments opened and showed the license is okay.
* Next I opened Cubase, and it launched just fine.

Is this one of those things that can occasionally happen, and if so are there any tips for avoiding it? Or could my dongle have a potential fault, or for that matter the USB port I am using for it?

No panic, but if there are any good tips about this I would appreciate it. Cheers!
Welcome to Cubase.

Welcome to Cubase.
Hardly a fault of Cubase. Simply a windows security feature.

Cubase 5 is the best x.0 version I have ever experienced.

HSO is really good btw. Just like HalionOne it does it's job very well. It never sounds spectacular perhaps but very playable and easy to use.

Kontakt 3 is supposed to go into public beta within a week or so. They were getting ready either yesterday or on Monday to review the final release candidate, and a few days later would be going public. So 64 bit is probably closer than some people think.

http://www.syncrosoft.com/downloads/Syn ... lSetup.exe
Download and install, doesn't even need a reboot.
Definitely make sure NOT to install the optional LPT drivers, though.

Sorry, a bit of sarcasm to enunciate that if a just-purchased piece of software gave me that much grief just to install and run I'd bring it back to the dealer so fast that the package would burn upon atmospheric reentry.
No, that wasn't me.
