Maybe for some...but I much prefer shooters on xbox and iPod. Computers make me feel an accountant.Nokenoku wrote:That's what I'm saying.

It all comes down to training and personal preferences. And that I believe to be a universal and quite trivial fact.
A shooter is best played with mouse+keyboard. THAT is a fact.
You will never ever find a person on gamepad, who could compete with a good mouse-player.

That is just a bold claim with no evidence. Proves nothing. In contrast to this it easily proven that you can be trained differently, thus someone who have not experience in mouse control would not be able to beat someone trained in gamepad, just because the unexperienced use a mouse. This is so trivial that it is boring to discuss. There is no inherited magic in a mouse, rest assured.Nokenoku wrote:It isn't.IncarnateX wrote:...Nokenoku wrote:A Shooter for example is best played with mouse+keyboard, not touchpad or gamepad.

Of course someone without experience would loose against a pad-gamer with experience.
But if you seriously think a pad-gamer could win against a fairly experienced mouse-gamer in a shooter, you just don't know what you're talking about.
Even most pad-gamers would not make such a ridiculous claim, because they know, it's wrong.
There doesn't need to be "magic" in a mouse .. it's just the way of control you get. You can nearly "jump" from one direction to another .. the hand-movement is taken 1:1 into the sight-movement.
With a gamepad there's limited turning-speed and reduced accuracy compared to a mouse.
Also in a racing-game it's not possible to beat a good driving-wheel-player, if you're on a keyboard.
But to get back to the topic:
There will always be certain applications, which are the most comfortable, if you use certain control devices. This is a fact.
You might be able to also control them with other devices, and with enough experience/learning it might even work well (sometimes it will, sometimes not), but you will never reach the level/quality/comfort of control you could reach with the proper device.
And there will always be tasks, which work better with a laptop (as there are some, which work better with a touch-pad).

So you keep claiming but repeating your claim with no evidence over and over again does not make it true. It might be true in your case but in mine it is not. Therefore my laptop for mobile needs is soon going to be replaced by an iPad and that is a fact. Obviously, you do not think the iPad can replace your needs and that is perfectly acceptable to me as long as you speak for yourself and not me. Diversity does not provoke anxiety in my world, so you may think what you like. If you want to "convince" me of your view though, you need arguments and evidence like scientific articles on the subject, references to empirical data, references to expert discussions etc. So far you have provided none.Nokenoku wrote:And there will always be tasks, which work better with a laptop (as there are some, which work better with a touch-pad).
BTW, the topic is iPads and therefore touch screens, not touch pads, which makes your whole point a bit OT unless your claim is that touch pads equals touch screens. IMO, a shooter made for PC hardly compare to a shooter made for iPod or iPad, but suit yourself.

No, that isn't a fact. Please provide links to studies proving your grand claim. Oh wait, this is the Internet: we can make grand claims without being bothered to back them up with any actual proof.Nokenoku wrote:It isn't.IncarnateX wrote:...Nokenoku wrote:A Shooter for example is best played with mouse+keyboard, not touchpad or gamepad.

Its not a fact but anyone preferring a gamepad to a mouse/key setup is silly

It is a fact. And the same goes for realtime-strategy-games like Starcraft. A Gamepad is just not suited for those types of games, and it's impossible to reach the level of a professional mouse-gamer by using a gamepad.polaris20 wrote:No, that isn't a fact. There is most likely no study, because it's obvious and well known.
Is there a study for "How to eat you pasta best .. sponge vs fork, what works better"?
No, there isn't. Some things can be answered with common sense.

With "touch-pad" I meant "tablet".

I concur. Playing an FPS with a joypad is like trying to have a w**k with your feet! It's just not practical. With a mouse your movement speed on an X/Y axis is determined by how fast you move the mouse. How can that movement possibly be replicated on a joypad?! You can always tell when someone is playing an FPS on a joypad by the jerky lateral to horizontal movement. Not good.Nokenoku wrote:A shooter is best played with mouse+keyboard. THAT is a fact.

Anyway, back on topic ...... sort off! Games on an ipad? Largely rubbish! I was playing a driving game on an ipad the other day in a shop. Steering was controlled by tilting the ipad. Not so bad. Braking & exhilarating was controlled for you!! A driving game where you don't control the speed or braking? That's a new one on me & it was totally s**t!!

There are no "real studies", because there does not exist a really true cross-platform FPS shooter that would enable such test, a game that would be the same, with the same amount of controllability for both PC and a console. The reasons why such game does not exist are outlined in the above article. No game company is going to develop such game precisely for this reason, as they would alienate their whole console-based customer base.

I have really tried to turn your claims into something meaningful like that you are speaking for yourself and not everybody but you keep going with the boredom of tautological evidence:Nokenoku wrote:It is a fact. "Its true because its true because its true"...ad infinitum...et ad nauseam!
And still all your universal claims fail in my specific case. Whether it holds for the rest of the world, I will let the rest of the world decide.
Once it was common sense that The Earth is flat!Nokenoku wrote:Some things can be answered with common sense.
Doesn't matter. Here is the quote we need to put an end to this shooter analogy:Nokenoku wrote: @IncarnateX

End of story. Now back to topic: Anyone else who like so share their views on the opening topic, which is about iPads as potential replacements of laptops and not about "best game consoles"?

Are there people who have played both console shooters and PC shooters who are saying with a serious face that console versions are anywhere near as face-paced and precise as the PC counterparts?
With every online PC FPS you have about a split second to kill someone after seeing them when every console shooter is a bunch of people running after each other in long shoot-outs like kids saying "I got you! I got you!"
Try to play any online PC shooter with a game controller and see how far you get

Nobody have said anything like it. The issue was whether mouse-control was "better" than Touch screens in shooting games. However, this whole deal is a strawman introduced to the thread by Nokenoku. Shooting games can not even be compared across platforms, so the issue doesn't make sense. As the OP, the only relevance to me concerning the main question is whether the gaming issue would be your personal reason not to replace a laptop with an iPad.The Chase wrote:Are there people who have played both console shooters and PC shooters who are saying with a serious face that console versions are anywhere near as face-paced and precise as the PC counterparts?
It would not be mine for sure.

Of course they can, why not? Did you even read the article that I linked? The guys at Microsoft did it, with results that were so bad for the console players, that they abandoned the whole idea of a cross-platform shooter. And I'm sure the upcoming Portal 2 from Valve (which will be cross-platform) will feature some major adjustments to make it possible.IncarnateX wrote:Shooting games can not even be compared across platforms, so the issue doesn't make sense.
