Why do producers still use hardware ?

Funny actually the opposite happened to me. Instead of scrolling through endless presets and and trying 30 different eq plugins (because they are all different/better) I now create sounds from scratch on some nice hardware to fit in with what want. There are somethings I don't really need hardware for, ROM players, samplers and Virtual Analogue are a couple of things done better in the box IMO.

I hear a lot of big talk regarding the superior sound of hardware. You know what would kill this thread pretty quickly? A blind test.

We've done those before, and the results were conclusive: people are mostly assholes who will just keep arguing.

Also, while attempting to prove that analog > digital by uploading MP3 files is really funny, it's kind of getting old.

A blind test is nice and all, but who, what and for what?
Who - To get an even remotely representative answer you would have to get a huge test group equally gathered from all age groups, sexes, cultural groups...
What - As there are big differences in sound between all synths (no matter whether analog or digital hardware or software), which ones would you pick for the test and which kind of sound (preset) would you choose?
For what - what would be your criteria? How 'good' it sounds? How 'analog' it sounds? How 'you name it' it sounds?

Nope, I have my doubts, that a blind test would kill this thread. Heck, even in areas where blind tests do make sense they did nothing to stop the 'DAW X sounds better' threads.

I'm not even sure what question you are answering, but that's always a good answer.
