I hate to ask this question, but specifically what genres are ya'll referring to as EDM? I mean, I know what the term stands for... electronic dance music, but with what connotation? The term has been around for many years but the meaning has changed lately and I don't know anymore what people mean by it. The most I can figure is poor quality house, eurotrance and dubstep.

I've not kept up with popular music for god knows how many years now so I have no idea what is popular in mainstream culture at the moment other than to some degree dubstep.

I'm not caught up in what is exactly happening in my thread, but...if this thread has gone down the path that I think it has:
Holy crap, we had this same argument last month about what constitutes "EDM" - please let's not get into semantics about genres. My point simply was saying there was a lot of music that seemed a bit...."commercial" compared to what is usually posted and it just seemed odd - in addition to the fact that the posters of said seemingly "commecial-esque" music were not active members in any other forum here on KVR, just the Cafe.

I'm caught up. Glad to see it hasn't -QUITE- gone down the path of arguing what makes "EDM". Although some silly arguments. I don't really have much to say beyond that, I don't really want to get involved.

It seems to me from what I've been reading as this thread has developed since my post is that everyone is referring to the "popification" of electronic music as I'll term it as opposed to "EDM"... this always comes with a watering down of genres to appeal to the masses and blatant commercialization of the music by studios, record labels and cookie-cutter 'artists' jumping on the band wagon to make money as their primary focus.

It becomes pop music with new gimmicks basically. And I can see why people hate that, it cheapens the essence of the genre(s). But at the same time it often influences mainstream tastes and can be gateways, into the giant melting pot of a culture's sound I suppose... There is both good and bad about that. While I refuse to be a hipster or elitist about music I'll admit that I just don't like the spirit of a style being lost, which isn't always going to be the case but it often enough is to make me skeptical of when something I like becomes too popular for it's own good.

It happened to Goa/psy in the late 90's, it's most recently (still is?) happening to dubstep, and god who knows what next. It first happened with Disco as well... so once the fad is over the cycle will repeat. It happens to all major styles of music at one point or another (rock, rap, country ect).
