Based upon the CPU hit of the free version, I didn't bother with the paid version. I was able to get Waves' Abbey Road plug-ins (including their console emulations) for less than $29 each over the past few months. I really like their sound and flexibility (not to mention the much lighter CPU hit), but it really depends upon what you're looking for, I'd say.
SGA's site doesn't specifically state that you can use the full version in a demo mode, though you can download it. They do say you can use the free version, as "Code Red Free serves as a fully functional demo for Code Red's core features". Maybe, but Free doesn't have the full EQ, the Inferno addition, the filters, metering adjustments, and a few other things.
If you have Waves, you can always try out their version of the Abbey Road consoles for free. And if you decide to buy it, this coupon will give you 10% off at Waves, while also throwing 10% of what you spend my way (a win/win!): https://www.waves.com/r/r8nupk. You can't use it with any of their discounts, but sales items are usually included.
