Well, for me, the "a virus with shoes" album and "tiny reminders" are about as classic as they get..justified wrote:Why didn't anybody mention Sabres of Paradise/Two lone swordsmen?
-edit- maybe not what you guys would call IDM, but

for me the term "IDM" is quite pretentious. It suggests white chin-stroking mid-30s men who would be scared of going to a club, but want to be cool whilst still listening to prog rock.
Anyway my choices in this "category"
Autechre - Draft 7.30 (get better with every Album)
Kid 606 - GQ on the EQ (gliltch noise brilliance)
SquarePusher - Go Plastic! (beat madness)
DJ Scud & Nomex - Total Destruction 7" (breakbeat/jungle/ragga/power electronics death mix)
Pansonic with Alan Vega - Endless (suicide and north european noise merchants - excellent!)

I guess Robert Miles's Organic can pass as IDM. I love that album, i hope the next one will keep the progression.
Also..
Bola - Fyuti
Bola - Soup
Strepsil - 70 Minutes Of Badness
Jello - Voile

But that describes me exactly. It suggests white chin-stroking mid-30s men who would be scared of going to a club, but want to be cool whilst still listening to prog rock.
I don't like the term IDM 'cause I used to get it confused, thinking it was Industrial Dance Music (which is actually EBM

hey I love classic IDM, especially Speedy J, autechre, Boards of Canada, Plaid etc, but I'm going to be devil's advocate and say that IDM is rapidly becoming the new trance - it's no longer innovative but has become stuck in a rut of endlessly rehashed insipid ambienty glitchy rubbish, and pumped out by 100 million laptop geeks.....
it's no wonder that some people reckon IDM stands for "inconceivably dull meanderings"!

So true... but there are still some people on the fringes who are really exploring. The mainstream of any genre gets tired pretty fast.Jbravo wrote:hey I love classic IDM, especially Speedy J, autechre, Boards of Canada, Plaid etc, but I'm going to be devil's advocate and say that IDM is rapidly becoming the new trance - it's no longer innovative but has become stuck in a rut of endlessly rehashed insipid ambienty glitchy rubbish, and pumped out by 100 million laptop geeks.....
