Sandman Unfiltered Audio Sandman

This is a super plug. Well done guys.

I have tried a lot of the more featured/complex delays and really wanted to like them. This is the first one I've tried that I feel is completely intuitive and fun to play with. It's really cool.

I took advantage of the last day of upgrade pricing.

If any original Sandman users haven't tried it and are wondering, it's a huge update to the plug to the extent that it's a different plug altogether.

I have found that in Sonar Platinum v22.10.0.19 on Win10 when I close the plugin UI during playback (also Sandman and Indent), it will often crash the DAW. It doesn't happen all the time, but once it happens it seems persistent. I'm using Asio4ALL drivers on an old M-Audio Black Box, so maybe that's a factor, but figured I'd post it in here anyway.
Sorry for the slow response! I was out for most of the weekend.

Check out this thread:

Another user was having a similar crash in Cubase. That user's issues were fixed by updating their graphics drivers. If you are unsure how to do that, I'd be happy to help.

No problem! That thread has some good info, and I did update my graphics driver but with no success; however, the OP in that thread was using an nvidia card while I'm using an AMD Radeon card.

I haven't tested running the VST2 version of the plug instead of the VST3 version yet, so I'll give that a try too. That said, the plugin is awesome enough that even having to wrestle with a bug or two is worth it.

I'm loving the upgrade. This is a fun toy that gets really creative. Its quite a bit different to the original (which is also excellent). Cool stuff.

For those of you that also own the other usual suspects such as Echoboy, Waves, Timeless, Primal tap, Papen or whatever, does this one offer things that can't be had by the others? I told myself no more delays...

I only own Bloom in terms of commercial delays, so take the following with a pinch of salt.

Sandman Pro is only really a delay in the loosest sense of the word. Delay is just one thing it can do. The original felt more like something halfway between a delay and a 'buffer mashing' effect, and Sandman Pro extends on those capabilities significantly with all the new algorithms. The 'modern instant' mode for instance behaves more like a granular plugin because it can alter delay times without changing the pitch of the audio during the transition, meaning you can do rudimentary timestretching or break chopping before you even start looking at the buffer freeze section.

It's one of those plugs that's difficult to explain because there's not really anything quite like it. It's in a strange no-man's-land of its own somewhere between a delay, buffer FX processor, and sampler. One which needs to be demoed IMO.

To be fair, Bloom's modulation system's more flexible than most delays as well. Transmod is by far my fav modulation system. Much faster workflow than click and drag.

Mo's demo video is now up!

In the meantime, we've fixed the two most major bugs. The modulation system works for all unique delay mode parameters (this had to have broken during late beta, and I am still very sorry that this made it into 1.0).

The other major bug was the weird "fewer taps higher CPU" bug in Multi-tap mode. This was actually a really bad denormal bug deep in our code. This not only fixed that issue, but it improved performance throughout the plug-in in general. Our other plug-ins will also benefit from this fix when those updates roll out.

The last thing we added is a hidden OpenGL disable switch for users experiencing rendering issues. This will help us to diagnose whether our rendering system or modulation system is leading to certain problems

We submitted builds on Friday, and it's going through the standard PA QA test right now. I anticipate that the hotfix should be out early next week.

Original Sandman owner here and upgraded. Started to have some real fun but my fan started up and my DAW was buzzing like mad like I was running a huge project (although it was just drums and Sandman Pro). Reaper wasn't reporting a big CPU hit (just 1.8%) but Sandman is definitely doing something wacky.

I notice now that Reaper users were reporting problems earlier as well. Any update ?

Experimenting with the Hang I sampled, playing a simple pattern through Sandman Pro using a custom preset. The smooth button isn't smooth enough for my taste, quite a few audible clicks depending on the delay mode used.

Proper. Diggit.
Tangled roots perplex her ways.

cool demo! I also have found smooth mode not to be strong enough to eliminate clicks sometimes. Continuous sounds (flute, etc) are more likely to reveal this for me.

Post

I too have noticed some clicks  made me a slightly sad panda when I first opened it up and started tweaking....
BUT!!
I absolutely freaking love the functionality of this plugin! I've only scratched the surface of what it can do, but yep brilliant concept. I had been wondering about buying sandman for some time and when I saw this version it became a 'must have'. Now I am wondering about indent, fault etc hmm love that gas

Yes, am hoping the update solves the Reaper CPU issue. Unusable at the moment :( but loads of fun! And to answer an earlier post: as an owner of Echoboy, Timeless-II, PSP, Waves, TK etc etc, this one definitely has something extra.

Agreed! Awesome demo.

Regarding the Smooth issues, is anyone having major issues with it when Start and End are static and unmodulated?

Smooth works by checking if the slept buffer read head is within 10 milliseconds of looping and starts a ducking envelope if true. In our experience, it has worked well for static Start/End parameters and loop sizes greater than 20 ms.

Sandman Pro has Smooth improvements over Sandman 1.2. Sandman 1.3 is in QA and has a switch for using the old Sleep smooth behavior or the new. It's definitely something that we're still working on improving for both.
