Early Pink Floyd

I find The Wall and The Final Cut are overblown pieces of pretentious, pompous shite. Don't get me wrong, I like pompous and pretentious music - when it works. Roger Water's is such a control freak, no wonder the others didn't want to work with him, the arrogant gobshite.
The 'middle' period of Meddle, Dark Side, Wish and Animals is by far their best. The early stuff I find a bit weak, maybe it's time to give that stuff another listen, I might appreciate it now. Like Obscured too.

hehe, he's maybe an arrogant gobshite but he hasn't been pushed out. he was the master and he simply declared that Pink Floyd was over.Mr Arkadin wrote:no wonder the others didn't want to work with him, the arrogant gobshite.
he's maybe an arrogant gobshite but as a musicien and as a writer, he's great.

Gilmore didn't sing every line on Dark Side. Brain Damage was sung by Waters. Also, Rick sang part of Time and other places on the album. But, Gilmour sang most of it.
On both the Wall and Final Cut there are other guitar players besides Gilmour. But, most of the solos if not all are still Gilmour I believe. Some can be Snowy White though. I even heard a version of Pigs on the Wing with a guitar solo (for teh 8 track!!!) that was Snowy White and not Gilmour. They've done some odd things having quest musicians or even singers. How about Roy Harper singing like a cross between the two of them on Have a Cigar! He sounded good too IMO.
I was always curious to know if it was Waters or Gilmour singing on that song on Final Cut... I forget the name but it sounds a bit like Young Lust and the lyrics are "F*ck all that we gotta get one with these". It sure sounds like Gilmour but I don't know. Anyone know? The solo in that song HAS to be him. Clearly Waters sings on the rest of the record and it might as well be a solo record. I heard that he came to PF with all three- Wall, Final Cut and Pros & Cons and said "which one do you want to do?". Ironically, one of my favorite songs that supposedly going to be on Final Cut and really WAS an outtake from the Wall was When the Tigers Broke Free. That song just gives me chills.

The Song is 'Not now John' and it is both Gilmour
and Waters on vocals , I think Gilmour takes the
main verses and Waters takes the in between bits
Gilmour >>>
f**k all that we've got to get on with these
Got to compete with the wily japanese
There's too many home fires burning
And not enough trees
So f**k all that
We've got to get on with these
Waters >>>>
Can't stop, lose job, mind gone, silicon
What bomb, get away, pay day, make hay
Break down, need fix, big six
Clickity click, hold on, oh no brrrrrrrrring bingo!
Waters >>>>>
Make em laugh, make em cry, make em dance in the aisles
Make em pay, make em stay, make em feel ok
Gilmour >>>>>>
Not nah John
We've got toget on with the film show
Hollywood waits at the end of the rainbow
Who cares what it's about
As long as the kids go
Not now John
Got to get on with the show
Great song BTW

My ears also tell me 'Not now John' is a duo at least to a point; the opening vocal line is Gilmour all the way, but I don't know how much farther he goes in the song, as the low key bridge stuff & chorus is clearly Waters..
That solo is Gilmour all the way..that's definative Gilmour playing there..
When the Tiger's broke free is one of my fav's as well. I remember when Mtv used to play the video. When I was old enough to 'see' The Wall, I was always curious what happened to that segment.
I think that track really belonged on Final Cut. To bad it didn't make it for whatever reason..

As Bob Ezrin said after he helped the Waters-less Pink Floyd record "Momentary Lapse of Reason", and I paraphrase "David and co. are musicians, Roger is an artist"

I think a lot of Waters songs from the Wall onwards were about him, his father and war.Raven wrote:BTW When the Tigers Broke Free is about Waters'sIronically, one of my favorite songs that supposedly going to be on Final Cut and really WAS an outtake from the Wall was When the Tigers Broke Free. Isn't everything Waters write about, about his father
Clearly I cant trust my ears very well I guess and I kinda knew that. I spend most of my time playing guitars and singing in punkbands.
So some (brain)damage is expected I guess.
On the Dark side DVD they talk about Brain Damage alot and Roger Waters even sing and play it on acustic guitar on the bonus material.
On the cover (of the DVD) only David is listed as vocals.
I still trying to locate the link about Gilmore only singing a bit on Not now John but cant find it.
It was a link from rogerwaters.com I believe but its gone now.
It was all about the split up and the general feelings between Waters and Gilmore.
It said that Gilmore did only sing chorus on Not Now John.
Btw I have the version with Pigs on the Wings.
Its starts with part 1 and then there is the guitar solo and finaly part 2.

i know everyone's having fun remembering and not caring about the downfalls, but to rephrase *moi* thesis, pf are like 'corporate' rock band, eg. in the pocket from conception, w/ cardinal sin of being the psychedelic corporate rock band, so f**k their musicianship.. that's about as offensive a concept as can be.fake wrote:They had a replica kitchen on stage, with dripping tap and were cooking eggs and bacon live when the did Alans Psychedelic Breakfast. They even had a motorbike on stage reving it up.
Trippy days :D
Now over sadly, and so are Pink Floyd.

To each his own I guess but when concept albums with a unique style and intelligent lyrics are hard to find, it's hard to be picky.
Dark Side of the Moon sure has a lot of devoted fans that love the music, including me.

I wasn't aware the term 'corporate rock' had been in circulation back in the early 70's..
Until Waters pulled out it was quality plain & simple. I don't despise em cause of an obviously earned respect. Final Cut was as perfect a departure album as has ever been made, IMO..to make 4 concept albums in a row & actually do it well..I haven't seen anything like it before or sense, although I wiegh the music more on it's individual merits as opossed to the entire albums.
Pink Floyd was a Mighty Act.
End of it for me here.

I couldn't care if they were funded by AT&T and managed by the tri-lateral commission. I judge music on the way it sounds, and disliking music because of why it was made makes no more sense than liking music because of why it was made.
And the Final Cut is in the middle of my PF faves list, but Fletcher Memorial Home is one of the best single tracks they have, IMO.

The 'Final Cut' track can bring tears to my eyes if I'm not prepared for it..that's one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard in any genre ever..Doug Nelson wrote:
