do you think music should contain a message ?

Music is a process of communication; it may or may not contain a message but it certainly doesn't have to. Communication is not just about conveying information anyway - the bottom line is that it's about being in contact (so if it's saying anything at this level it's simply "I am here" or even "I am")

Origami, if you're responding to me, I just want to point out that I cited "Sheep May Safely Graze" forgetting that it has lyrics at all, and "Block Rockin' Beats" as an example of music with minimal lyrics. I was trying to make the point that you're making, and I schcrewed it up!origami wrote:but saying music with a message equals music with lyrics and so music without lyrics equals music without message is a mistake.
Also, I was trying to illustrate that music with meaning in the lyrics has two meanings (lyrical and musical), which may or may not be somewhat related.
Point well taken.

that's what i meant, isn't it?xoxos wrote:well that's what happens when you suck up a whole bunch of contrived artificial experience.. you saturate yourself with demi-impressions that imprint all kindsa values so it doesn't really matter what you think you're doing, it's game over for purity of volition, and you'll do what the new, improved 'right course' isclueless wrote:i'm not sure they actually give a shit whether the proles think or not.xoxos wrote: some of these apparently narrow minded guys arent narrow minded, they're just evil liars who want the proles to continue not thinknig about their shit.
*edit* by which i mean perhaps you credit them with too much 'intelligence' (for want of a better word). I don't think 'they' consider it as much as e.g. you do. they just bumble on in a 'higher' strata of mindlessness.![]()
what use is volition in a void anyway?
*edit* so either way you're f**ked, and everything's shit, but if that's a universal precondition or eternal fixed parameter...

yeah its obvious you dont teach english lol
music isnt a process of communication, at least in the
technical realm. its the message. I sure hope youre not teaching students this. There are specific models of communication and music isnt one of them. What are you talking about its a process of it?
A conversation isnt a process of communication either, the process would be the different models, such as the encoder -> message -> transmission -> decoder etc etc

When I include lyrics, there's a message. It's in a dry comedic style. I don't like to hit people over the head. That's what the things I'm singing about do. I try to make a specific point without isolating too many, but it can't be helped. Having a message can be risky, as a bad message (in one's opinion) can ruin a good song.
I'm not fond of self-serving or introspective lyrics. I'd like to hear an end to the "baby come back" songs. However, I don't mind someone like Marilyn Manson identifying with the underdog as a form of compassion.
This has been a self-serving message.
