If the depression starts to hit, you can always look back through the crowds' response each time you post your incredible work. If the gentle stroking of your ego doesn't help keep it at bay, I can always ship you some of my meds

Don't need meds. I would say most of my erratic behaviors come from my fundamental view point that the best way to shake ones creative's up is to destroy things, particularly things with a perceived value to others and particularly to ones sense of Self. Self is an illusion, compiled from the sediment of the past, structures that inevitably only limit and narrow a perception of the possible, they are a weight that drags one down. So, this sort of disruption to the psyche's crutch fuels an impulse to the creative, for me, like desperation to fill a void, even if imposed intentionally only to fill the void. What is cluttering my space, what is filling it up, what have I done that binds me to it. People keep things far to long and rely on the past to formulate a sense of self this is something I don't ascribe to, so I destroy as much of my historicity as possible and forsake sentimental clinging. Sounds insane and probably is but I never claimed to be a stable or rational person.apuhjee wrote:If the depression starts to hit, you can always look back through the crowds' response each time you post your incredible work. Then there is the side of, I went and looked at what I had done one day. I got pissed off because I didn't like it or felt it should have been better here and here and here and here. My solution: deleted it. I'm sort of fond of finality.
I read a philosophical passage once, the author I can't remember, it was a post Marxist writer, and it was saying progress is an angel moving forward not seeing the destruction behind it. So I thought what if this 'angel' turned around would the destruction stop? I say no. In fact it will revel in its destruction and move blindly forward without purpose; building things only to destroy them for it own satisfaction.
Ok that was really OT

I took everything I could find on my harddrive and put it into one file. Not sure what is in there only that its knobman stuff. From looking at the thumbnails some of it not so great, so of it is ok, and some of it is nice. 288files + whatever is in the 44 folders.apuhjee wrote:This is one d/l, in particular, I would love to have grabbed...

Work want to know why I'm need to run home real quick for a change of pants. What should I say?
Thanks for the christmas present Jonathan! Thanks for starting this thread Leslie, and for all the hard work you've shared as well! It's encouraging to see the continual improvement in your offerings. Thank you as well brok and wok (no... I didn't do that on purpose...) and all the others who've shared for the benefit of those besides themselves.
Have a merry christmas! (and don't forget to download all the great stuff on the 25th!)
Regards ~ jp

hils, this is part of being an artist. you cant look at your past works and judge them fairly, you will always feel that your works that are older are inferior to your new ones, because that is how evolution of a skill works. you've got a keen grasp on the philosophy of self and you're right the best thing to do when you feel stuck or robotic cranking out the same stuff over and over is to completely reinvent or destroy all preconceptions of what you do and how you think of it as you do it.Hlis93 wrote:Don't need meds. every artist feels this way, and after it's all over the artists struggle with their art and the directions things go in because that's how it's supposed to be. the muse, the pursuit of the realization of what we feel so that others can relate and comprehend the messages we're transmitting, all of these things are personal to the artist and will never be achieved in finality or completeness because the goal is impossible. the goals we set for ourselves as artists, be they long term ones or short term ones are never reached because something inside of us knows that we will never be satisfied with the things we create because we will always think we can do something better than we did before. hence the futility of our craft becomes an obstacle if you let it. the secret i've found around most of this is to stop caring and listen only to the spontaneity of your spirit and guide your vessel along wherever your heart feels it should go, not where you /think/ it should go, nor where you have heard others say it should go, but the truest closest essence of creative outlet, that climactic moment where you lose yourself in your work and find hours have passed and you were lost in the moments to step back and look at what you've done with judgment is part of this process.
dont let it get to you. just keep listening to that voice. you cant go wrong.

Doesn't sound insane to me. In fact I'd say it sound a lot like some parts of Bhuddism and other eastern philosophies.Hlis93 wrote:Self is an illusion, compiled from the sediment of the past, structures that inevitably only limit and narrow a perception of the possible, they are a weight that drags one down. There's some kind of Japanes ritual that involves breaking a mirror to symbolically break from the past and the false sense or illusion of who you think you are.
Sorry for the OT

@Pat2070: I like the 3D knob you put up. I think the top layer needs a little adjustment as it seems to break the 3D illusion - at least to my eyes.
@WOK: Wow! Good work
Here are my first attemps at knobs that I'm actually thinking of using on a GUI. I think I like the large one least of all, but I'm unsure how to improve it. Any suggestions?

I think that is excellent Matt. I was doing something like that the other day myself, I'll post latter. Heres my suggestion but its more about application. I would take the knob itself out and use the rest in the background image.

Yes, I need to practice more at making 3D stuff.matt42 wrote:@Pat2070: I like the 3D knob you put up. I think the top layer needs a little adjustment as it seems to break the 3D illusion - at least to my eyes.
Perhaps try shrinking the line work closer to the knob itself?matt42 wrote:I'm unsure how to improve it. Any suggestions?

Nice. I would make the shadow darker and not so soft (looks like the knob is flying over the surface).matt42 wrote:Here are my first attemps at knobs that I'm actually thinking of using on a GUI. I think I like the large one least of all, but I'm unsure how to improve it. Any suggestions?
With the big one you could try to diffuse the outer black a little, use emboss or edge highlight to engrave the line on the knob and bring the numbers/radiate closeer to the knob.

Thanks Hlis, I appreciate that. Praise means a lot coming from you. For sure I'll just use the inner knob graphic for the png strip. I put the whole lot up so they can be seen in context. I'd also love to see the ones that you've been working on if you have time to put them up that would be awesome.
WOK, that's a good point about the shadows. In my attempt to make them subtle I overlooked the fact that diffuse shadows give the impression of distance.
About the length of the radials; I've got used to looking at them like that and kind of like it that way. My other reason for not brining them closer into the knob is that I've just about got the skin built around these knobs and changing dimensions now would result in fair bit of work
The top surface of the large knob didn't quite look finished to me, so I've adjusted that and sharpened up the shadow. Here it is:

What do you guys think am I headed in the right direction?
