Nice. I kinda want all their stuff... Been thinking off and on about a Bush of Ghosts for ages. Ive already got a box of ISD1820 boards, though.

PWM Mantis. Going to order one later. Cheapest shipping from UK for some reason, and I just can't get one locally. It seems black and green are the new black and yellow!

Looks like that would be a heap of fun. Reminds me of the Pro 3 with all the options but still pretty much knob per function.kritikon wrote: Sat Jul 06, 2024 11:13 pm PWM Mantis. Yea, I was excited about Mantis but I can't understand why they didn't put a full program save function on it and I think I would like the Kobol expander more with raw analog tones.kritikon wrote: Sat Jul 06, 2024 11:13 pm PWM Mantis. I got a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro, first new earbuds in several years, replacing the $18 QY8s that I always thought punched above their weight.
Active noise cancellation is weird. It's kind of jarring when it turns off. I rarely realize how noisy my home is when I just think it's quiet (except on those rare occasions when I want to record something with a mic)... fans and aquariums and fridge etc.
Anyway, these don't sound as clean as my GMP 8.35Ds that I use for music making, and for some reason the app only has EQ presets and not customizable EQ. But for not-too-expensive earbuds they're very nice.

I told myself "no new eurorack this year"! But here I am... I had a bunch of modules which sat unracked after my recent downsizing but I couldn't bring myself to sell them for whatever reason. I was at Perfect Circuit over the weekend and they were having a sale, so I ended up with a new case and a third Empress ZOIA.

This will be a great effects rack for drum machines and the Buchla modular, I think. A friend is debating whether to trade me his Kermit module for a pedal of mine, and if that goes through, this rack will be full!

It's kind of funny how that happens. You swear "no more" and end up going on a small shopping spree. I think everyone watching this thread has been through that — possibly several times!justin3am wrote: Mon Jul 08, 2024 3:59 pm I told myself "no new eurorack this year"! But here I am... Yep, that's how it goes.
I'm still trying to put away money for our garage conversion but I had some funds to spare this month, so it was okay to splurge.

UBXa arrived today. First impressions:
1. The stripes are not as fugly in real life as on the pics. It actually looks quite classy.
2. First play with presets incredibly meh. Bank A presets (I presume the original OBXa presets?) are so bland and cheesy, it sounds like a cheap'n'nasty Juno. I wondered why I wasted my money.
3. Got into some twiddling and it's way deeper than it looks or initially sounds. Capable of some really intricate, evolving and even powerful sounds without too much headscratching.
4. It's overall a bit soft, slow and spongey - just how I remember Obies from way back, and why they never set me on fire.
5. I love the pulse waves. With some pulse mod combined with filter, it can do some beautiful sucking sounds that other synths lack.
6. Despite lacking aggression the 12dB filter is really quite attractive. The 24dB filter is as meh as I remember. Maybe that's why I never remember Obies fondly...perhaps only experienced 24dB filteriness? 12dB filters IMO almost always do the biz.
7. 16 voice unison on deeply filtered pwm sucking sounds...OMFG!
. I didn't know I lacked this type of monster sound
8. Despite lack of aggression, it has a beautiful and deep bass. No good imo for aggro bass techno boings and blips, but it has rich undersubs and I suspect this is a great synth for dub basslines. Not what I expected.
9. I haven't even had it in the studio yet with FX slathered over it. It's probably the first analogue synth I've had that impressed me dry without FX. Did not expect that either.
Money well spent, great value. Haven't even got into mod matrix or entropy settings yet, but should be good. It does have the flabby, slow cheese character of Obies but it really can do so much more when you dig in. I think it's not an instant gratification synth unless you're into prog rock, but even for a techno dub oldie it has some very redeeming possibilities. Way more flexible than I expected.
Next. Will order a PWM Mantis when Andertons have them back in stock. Should be the polar opposite of UBXa.
