I'm sure many of us make an entire piece using single presets already - I do.Sparky77 wrote:Oh, there is no question you could make an entire song from a single preset.Greg Houston wrote:4 more macro slots, 4 more LFOs, and 3 times as many matrix slots and you could probably make entire songs out of a single preset. Its cool, but playability is limited to one note (generally Middle C), so....
Its a very capable synth for sure.
Check out the many audio examples, its impressive, and these are with the first release.
But don't forget, you can make an entire song with a single violin, guitar, flute, piano, etc...

That to me is actually the true acid test for synthesized instruments, the day we can easily make a new sound/instrument that has whatever mojo real acoustic instruments have that you could skillfully play the same synthesized instrument solo on 10 songs in a row, perhaps with vocal accompaniment, and not grow tired of it just like with an acoustic guitar or piano.Sparky77 wrote:But don't forget, you can make an entire song with a single violin, guitar, flute, piano, etc...

I tried to program a typical saw pluck with the Virus XL, Serum (with Virus Wavetable), Sylenth, Spire (in this order). It's a 4x Unison and always a pattern with 4 bars.

Agreed. We tend to act like you need different presets, or even VSTIs, aka different "instruments", to have enough interest to make an entire song or album or career. Players of acoustic or electric non-synth instruments do sometimes use different instruments, esp electric folks, but they're still playing guitar, or bass, or whatever, and many of them the same one all the time, without falling into that attitude. I've mostly been playing the same one guitar and one bass for many years. If I've got nothing fresh going on, it's not that I need a new axe methinks.Greg Houston wrote:That to me is actually the true acid test for synthesized instruments, the day we can easily make a new sound/instrument that has whatever mojo real acoustic instruments have that you could skillfully play the same synthesized instrument solo on 10 songs in a row, perhaps with vocal accompaniment, and not grow tired of it just like with an acoustic guitar or piano.

Installed the Codex demo and converted the wavetables to Serum ^^
Had to doublecheck some wavetables if I did them correctly. Some of them are just.. well, meh.
(Check 58 to 62 for example. Almost half a table offset on the first position while the tables are really 512 samples)

Thanks. I actually like these quite a bit. There's a general style or simplicity to them that makes modulating through the sub-tables very useable.Mace404 wrote:Installed the Codex demo and converted the wavetables to Serum ^^

"64 Nothing" should just be removed from the pack though. In theory it might make a nice placeholder for an unused oscillator, but it's incompatible with Serum and causes problems, at least on Windows 7 in Cubase 7.5.

Simon, you are a genius when it comes to this odd-worldly, drone-ish stuff.

Was doubting about that one indeed. I had no errors saving/loading that one so I just included it for the sake of completion. Will remove it then.Greg Houston wrote: Thanks. Edit: Updated the zip.

A little "old school" for Serum.

Steve and Lance, thank you for making Serum! It's beautiful, sounds great, and is comprehensible and easy to use, even for a duffer like me.
It has been nice to read this thread: the enthusiasm, the positive spirit, the inspiration. I think that just reading this thread might have improved my character a little.
I have only spot-checked a few of the presets but I'd like to mention that last night I spent some time just playing "FX Ambiance Evil" by Kris Giampa while fiddling with knobs -- very nice rumble-space instrument!

Do you have Waves permission to distribute these wavetables on the net freely? I don´t think they like it...Mace404 wrote:Installed the Codex demo and converted the wavetables to Serum ^^
