@Dom: I'm pretty cool with the new model in general, but here's a question:
So, let's say I keep waiting for 3 or 4 years, happily using my increasingly outdated version, while you're adding new features, bugfixes, etc. Will the renewal after that time be 159€ still, and will I get all the stuff you added in between? I can't imagine this - what's the plan for this scenario?
I'm curious, too.
So am I. Has this been answered yet? If so, can someone please point me to that answer, as I cannot find it? If not, can we get an answer please?

To rephrase the question: what does "renew your license" cost? 380 € or 160 €?
It is $169 (cheaper on sale) regardless of how long you wait... of course that can be changed in the future, but that is where it stands now.

If you want an answer from Bitwig, email them directly. They hardly ever post in this forum.
tbh i dont believe that one will get the upgrade from 2.X to 3.0 for just the renewal of ones yearly support fee. this concept is on very thin ice and it depends on how fast and how good they deliver content worth of 160 dollars a year (or just in case of this years - and a half ;D - patch rate and substance: the price of the new synth phase4 and few more mod and devices stuff).
now its the revamped sampler and its of course out side the first year since 2.0, which leads to the impression that a typical bitwig timespan of major releases will cost users (who surely expect to get bugfixes for their x.0 release at least inside of a 2 year window) two "subscriptions". which at the end is not that less expensive as one might think by purchasing a major release for 399 bucks, adding up the two payed subs its over 700bucks for one major release. which is still on par, well roundabout..., with ableton live suite costs :D. thats y i a msure that the next major release will cost some extra moneys. so its hard to decide if one wants to go that way with bitwig or not and call it sub or not, or a day or whatever...

You are assuming 3.0 will be some significantly different upgrade than 2.9. It may turn out that 2.9 -> 3.0 will be no different in scope than 2.8 -> 2.9, or 2.3 -> 2.4

2.3 didn't just have Phase-4 and a few more mod and devices stuff... it also had important core additions - time signature changes, voice stacking, huge improvements to time stretching and expanded device views.

The point of this pay model was to allow the Bitwig team to roll out updates as they were ready without having to build enough features to justify a large version upgrade/release . That is what I understood ; therefore I would not expect big version level features from 2.9 -> 3 . I would more likely expect to continue to see steady albeit incremental and continuous development. With some features being more groundbreaking than others.

not this stupid thread again. :D

i dont expect any 2.9 or else anyways. they hardly reached 1.3 and they hardly will reach 2.6. they need a major upgrade to get things going beforehand..

that was inside the 1 year, well something like that^^, we could expect to happen tbh. and it was well worth a big portion of the fee we have to spent for the "support". on the other hand 2.1 and 2.2 had exactly what content compared to 2.3?

if there wouldnt have been the u-he deal i wouldnt have bought the upgrade til now. thats for sure the positive part of that deal, u are not forced to pay to use the software like in real subs.

but evrything else is just thin ice imo.

Sorry guys, but this thread has run it's course for long enough.
If you have a beef with the price, the updates, the numbers of the updates or the individual worthiness of the features added, take it to Bitwig directly or use something else that fit's you better.
This is a user forum and no matter the amount of moaning and repetition of "is it a subscription or not" or "is it too expensive or not" or "shouldn't this have been in V1.0 already or not" won't change anything but annoy the hell out of everybody.
Go make some music! :-)

Cheers,

Tom
