experimental: ok..now.. i'm confused....

can someone help me out here? i mean i had an idea (i thought i did) but now it's all blurry.
what the fuck is experimental music? could you give me examples? old, new.. doesn't matter.
where does one start?
are there rules to experimental music? such as ... it must not have 4/4 beats, or it must have an end goal, there shouldn't be any structure (no beginning, no middle, no end), or a genius structure only recognizable by savants or people with donkey ears? :p
can anyone who makes weird, unconventional sound be considered experimental? are there any conventional sounding however experimental musicians? (i wanna say it's hiphop, but i don't really know what the fuck it is)
should there be a defining touch by the experimental artist? a signature maybe? and does that take away from the experimental label?
why does one make experimental music?
