can someone help me out here? i mean i had an idea (i thought i did) but now it's all blurry.
what the f**k is experimental music? could you give me examples? old, new.. doesn't matter.
where does one start?
are there rules to experimental music? such as ... it must not have 4/4 beats, or it must have an end goal, there shouldn't be any structure (no beginning, no middle, no end), or a genius structure only recognizable by savants or people with donkey ears? :p
can anyone who makes weird, unconventional sound be considered experimental? are there any conventional sounding however experimental musicians? (i wanna say it's hiphop, but i don't really know what the f**k it is)
should there be a defining touch by the experimental artist? a signature maybe? and does that take away from the experimental label?

for me, experimental music is music whose main goal is to go someplace sonically/structurally/expressively new.
new can be for the composer; i've never done this before. or for the genre; drum and bass has never done this before. or for music: this has never been done by anyone in any genre before.
and a huge part of embracing the experimental spirit is to *continue* to reach for the new, unprecedented. it's fine to discover something new and make a set of pieces around it. but once this newness becomes part of your repertoire, it becomes old ... and the experimentalism is diminished. so experimenters are, by definition: restless, always moving on, always changing. :-)

for me experimenting is trying out new ways to connect tools (usually hardware) or new ways of bringing about sound in an unconventional matter.
I realize there's such a thin line in what makes experimental music experimental. It could be argued and discussed in a variety of ways, but for me it is a drive to find new routes; even if they may have been travelled before by others and to explore new territory.
Hmmmm, it isn't as easy to put a tag on this somehow and answer your questions.
