Do you not like the TAL-Bassline? I think it's great.
nice synth, but has nothing to do with the sh101/mc202, soundwise ...
It sounds about 80% like a real Roland SH-101 when I compare them side by side.
you're kidding ... no feckin way ... the env's are linear(!!!), the filter aliases as hell with high resonance and the filter at all doesn't sound like an 101 ... not to speak of the osc's, in particular the pulse wave sounds completeley different ... and when using fully keyfollow on the tal filter, the filter won't even really close when the fade is set to minimum ...
BFunKu wrote:>snip< The closest VSTi that I've heard to the Roland SH-101 is the discontinued TC Mercury.

you're getting strange more and more ... :)
max the resonace on both, turn all osc's on and listen ... in the mercure there's no feeback nonelinearities whatsoever and the osc's are straight flat out computed waves, no shapes like the real one has ...
BFunKu wrote:The MC-202 is actually better than a SH-101 in my opinion. It's like a SH-101 with a cool TB-303 style Step-Sequencer and Accent function. But in some cases it might be better to have a Keyboard like the SH-101? 8)
yeah, i miss a keyboard on my 202, too ... though you can get a cv to midi converter and then play it via midi ... depending on the converter (i used a phillip rees one) the timing is ok ...

Mu-Tron made a box that a bass player that I worked with used once in a while. Made his bass sound almost like a synth. It went owww, owwww. What was that thing called - it drove me nuts - I never recovered. :help: Looked like the one in the middle in the second row.

Silly me...forgot what forum I was in. FYI: I just read the title/thread and didn't see anything barring Fx. Oh, well. :dog:

BTW, the Maestro USS-1 Universal Synthesizer System should still qualify, yeah?

Seems like it would be painful to smack into that metal box.
Better be careful near that end of it. :?

not sure what you mean? the cable between the box and the controller is standard usb, so it could be as long as 5 metres.
the youtube vid they link to at the top of the page is pretty cool :)

i'd include the trautonium project in that list :

...or i would say in general any electronic musical instrument from early 20th century

The other box, at the end of the ribbon itself.
I can just picture my skin getting snagged inside of it. Then I start bleeding.

Actually, the PowerCore 01 (formerly Mercury) is, according to the developer himself (answered me personally at the PowerCore support section), almost 99% close to the original. He finetuned it to sound like the real deal and dialedit in as close as he could get.

I know you're picky on this topic, but if we're really picky - NOTHING comes close to the original due to the involved AD/DA converters - even with pure digital synths.

Personally I don't care if it's only 80-90% spot on. In a mix it doesn't matter anyway. I mean, listen to the A/B demos from Chris Huelsbeck for the SQ8L, close, but not the hardware. Then again, close enough to be convincing.

Just my 2c on that issue. Since I never owned a Roland synth from that era, I can't go more in-depth on the SH/Juno/whatever discussion myself.

hmm, i don't own the powercore and i never heard the mercury of it, but he must have vastly improoved the mercury then (which of course could be) ... i only have the vst native version, and thatone's really not even remotely sounding like an 101/202 ...

Buchla 200e (his synths always had a unique sound)

Those are two expensive synths. I wonder if it is possible to emulate these synths.
Isn't it Yamaha VL-1 instead ? (ie the big brother of beloved VL7m  ?)

Never seen one in action. :?
VP-1 is Poly - I believe VL-1 is mono . There was about $35,000.00 difference in price. VP-1 makes some serious sounds. From what I recall, Yamaha set out to build the ultimate physical modeling synth. They started with strings - bowed and plucked. You should hear some of the string patches on this thing. The plucked stuff is tough also - sort of like Cube, but much better sounding - more detail. This thing was way ahead of its time, but it turned out to be too expensive to make at the time. They stopped at two. They were both sold and as far as I know, still with the original owners.
That makes sense

Thanks for the tip. Wasnt even aware of it :D
