some months ago i saw that win 8 is much more customisable than win 7,you can change the look a lot.

In what way? I've been using a Win8 VM for over a year and exclusive on my laptop since the RTM. It seems neither more nor less customizable than 7 to me. The metro part is new and I guess you could say that allows for "extra" customization ... That would really be staring at the lipstick on the pig.

It's how they rolled out NTFS and I agree with the approach. Corruption at the filesystem level can be particularly insidious. Give it time to mature. Heck, Linux has been working on ext4 since 2006 and they just discovered a corruption bug in the stable branches of 3.4,3.5,3.6.

I'd be a lot more concerned if MS decided to add their new filesystem ReFS 1.0 to Win 8 as the default choice.

Yeah, good point. It's just that the blog author's comment about data corruption being extremely rare is nonsense. I've experienced it plenty. My current process of platform migration has revealed hard drive data corruption several times in files I don't access frequently. A couple years back I lost a good photo to file corruption. The TIFF has proven impossible to repair with all those BS image file repair utilities too. And I keep backups. Backups are worthless if you don't have endless money to throw at media and if you're backing up corrupted data.

I wasn't going to do it, but I couldn't resist and now I've updated my DAW too.

So far the only problem that I've encountered is that all of my SonicCharge plugins (Microtonic 3, Synplant, Bitspeek and Permut8) needed to be re-registered.

Running Cubase 6.5 in 32bit mode, tracks from my album have played back with pretty much the same CPU usage as they did on Windows 7.

Plugins that I've briefly tested so far, and in no particular order:

Albino 3
Nexus
Omnisphere
Stylus RMX
Massive
ARP 2600V
Maschine Mikro
Korg Legacy Cell
Absynth 5
Rapture
ElektraX
Sylenth
plus the 4 SonicCharge plugins mentioned above.

I've only very briefly tested them, but so far there are no performance issues.

My audio interface is an M-Audio ProjectMix I/O running over Firewire. This is running on an i5 based system with 7Gb of memory and a single 1900*1080 monitor. To anyone concerned about the Start screen, once I had launched Cubase, I had no reason to switch back to it and it was just like running on Windows 7, or even XP.

Like the AMD Athlon X2 system I upgraded previously, Windows 8 seems a bit nippier than 7.

and FWIW you could do that stuff on XP and Win95 too. I used a highly customized version of this desktop about 12 years ago or so...

I know it's only a small thing, but you can set custom images for your lock screen easily in Windows 8. In windows 7 you had to use a registry hack / group policy setting, and name a custom image specifically in a specific folder.

On the flip side, it seems a glaring omission that OOTB you can't change the start screen background to something bespoke.

i still try to figure out how to get this look but with aero enabled!

i might upgrade to win 8 then.

It's on Win Customize. I haven't used Rainmeter or Desktop X in a LONG time though. Not sure if all the plugs, icons, graphics, macros and scripts are still hosted anywhere.

Since we are so far OT, I'd just add that the mod community from XP, which included companies like Stardock, really led to a lot of the task bar functionality you see in W7 and W8. Launch lists, app favorites, app groups, etc... I vastly prefer the task bar concept to the Launch Pad concept. But, that is like arguing white spaces and tabs (tabs people are idiots though )

hehehe, that's what everyone around me was using while I had the one I linked. Some of the new desktops are F'n artistically amazing, but functionally they are useless. Unless, all you do is e-mail, stream mp3s and watch youtube.

yes,i love shortcuts on the taskbar but the desktop itself is just boring empty black.
for me it will stay like this,psychological it is so much more balancing.
