Tone2 Firebird going Freeware

While installing this, I noticed that the setup accessed and modified all my Sylenth1 banks, which reminded me of past scandals about Marcus' copy protection schemes. So a closer look revealed that the setup scans the whole VST folder (this is while the setup window says "creating directories") and looks at every single file. Filemon reports 'SET SECURITY' for every file, don't know what that means. It also insists on reading evey copy of 'desktop.ini' in every subdir of C, even if there isn't one

The installer seems to check for Tone2 keyfiles and if they are legal.

I have all Tone2 synths installed and Sylenth1 too and never noticed any problems based on the Tone2 copy protection.

Especially as in the installer you could choose to install Firebird only (and no Saurus demo). Maybe some people have missed that drop-down menu...

So as long as we have legal software, what's the problem?

Exactly my point. I have 6 Tone 2 synths installed (including Nemesis beta) and no single problem with it.

That's not the point. But I'm sure you're aware of that. The question asked by several persons was if the installer meddles with other files or not. This quote shows that it does. You could ask Markus for first-hand info on the matter. As for me, years ago I decided not to use any Tone2 products, whether legit or cracked or free, exactly for this kind of malware- and spyware-like behaviour.

And I'm not the only one who doesn't like that.

I am cool with their decision to check for cracked stuff from their company and remove it. And a little bit of awareness while installing programs should be mandatory for everyone who is using a PC. It's not my fault if people like to skip all those parts and hit the next button like there is no tomorrow.

I am fine with your decision. I made some similar ones in the past with other products. But as long as no one shows what exactly and how it has been modified I call it BS especially the Sylenth1 thingy which I can not believe. If this is true this would be the death of every company who acts like this (or at least a huge image loss).

Tone2 hasn't really thought of environments like schools or shared DAW machines/studios. Doesn't matter if it's different User logins...
Even though many developers would like to screw the pirates, the answer is not by going down to the same level as the warez users.

Deletion of anything on a computer without saying so before doing it - is the same behaviour as a virus.

Also, I doubt that Tone2 themselfs never used warez back when they were students.

Nope. A virus is called a virus because its primary ambitions are infection and reproduction. Destruction falls into neither of those, so your argument is flawed.

Someone claimed that the Firebird installer messes with Synlenth files.
