Add in modulatable step length, sequence length, swing, velocities, etc (all per lane or sequence) and a step sequencer becomes a very different thing altogether to a piano roll editor, almost an instrument in itself. Its a whole different way of getting creative and inspired, and opens up what you would never achieve in other ways with out a lot more effort.SLiC wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 6:50 am it’s more about the fun stuff you normally get with step sequencers like probability, ratchet, micro timing, polyrytems etc

I would just like a simple sequencer, with the things like groove/shuffle etc. Where you can trigger it from a note, so you can play a sequence with a note press and transpose it depending on the pitch of the note you play. i.e. so you can program a diy fixed/custom pattern
Some more features, like start note, direction, loop length (maybe all per note e.g. tremor) etc that can be modified would be great too. And I'm fine if it also worked with drums.

I always thought step-sequencing was all about keyboard note entry. Meaning, you set a meter, like every 1/8 note and for each note played on your keyboard or drum pad controller, you've recorded an 1/8 note and the record head advances an 1/8 note to record the next. Am I confusing this with something else? Maybe something called 'step recording'?

Yup, though in the hardware world (where step sequencers originate), the concepts are closely related. This topic is more about an FL Studio-style step sequencer UI.lunardigs wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 2:02 pmAm I confusing this with something else? Maybe something called 'step recording'?

I much prefer to emulate the way Studio One has done it. With some of the cool stuff from Logic.Dionysos wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 2:13 pmThis topic is more about an FL Studio-style step sequencer UI.

To me that broadly falls into the category "FL Studio-style step sequencer".pdxindy wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 2:21 pm I much prefer to emulate the way Studio One has done it. With some of the cool stuff from Logic.
I didn't mean to imply a specific implementation, of course everything can be discussed here. The mockup in the first post seems to be based on FL though, and didn't mention step recording.

Thanks for the clarification... yeah, step recording is a separate feature (imo). I would welcome that too. I was happy with the Live step recording implementation.Dionysos wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 2:48 pmTo me that broadly falls into the category "FL Studio-style step sequencer".pdxindy wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 2:21 pm I much prefer to emulate the way Studio One has done it. You can probably build something using the arpeggiator in a note selector device._leras wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 12:15 pm I would just like a simple sequencer, with the things like groove/shuffle etc. Where you can trigger it from a note, so you can play a sequence with a note press and transpose it depending on the pitch of the note you play. i.e. so you can program a diy fixed/custom pattern

Don't you just have to show the velocity lanes at the bottom? Those were missing from the Bitwig image but could be shown.T71 wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 6:49 amIt doesn't have the immediacy of an X0X style sequencer, where you add and subtract notes and adjust velocity and duration on the fly. That combined with Bitwig's touch capability should have been a no-brainier for the Devs a long time ago (IMHO).Echoes in the Attic wrote: Sun Aug 23, 2015 12:46 pmExactly this. How is this not a step sequencer already?Jolaff wrote:Personally I don't really see what it could bring to Bitwig ...maybe if it could keep in memory many patterns that you could select and then drag and drop to the arrangement...
I'm sure when Bitwig will open the hood someone will make a step sequencer....
But for now....
That would look something like this

I'm not against a step sequencer though. I'm sure there could be cool features not that easy to do with normal clip midi.

Honestly I think MIDI in the Grid that allows you to control other soft synths etc. would be the bigger thing to me than basic step sequencing in the piano roll.

Oh yeah... Midi in the Grid is my #1 feature wish.machinesworking wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 8:58 pm Honestly I think MIDI in the Grid that allows you to control other soft synths etc. would be the bigger thing to me than basic step sequencing in the piano roll.

Yep having means to manipulate MIDI inside the polygrid would be huge. I'd love to know if this is coming soon because I'm keen on Loomer's Architect, but I'd be annoyed if I forked out for that software and Bitwig implemented something along those lines with the polygrid... Guess I need to be patient.
But as has been pointed out earlier in this thread the arpeggiator and other note/MIDI and container devices along with the modulation system can take you far.

I can’t imagine that the grid doesn’t eventually get some midi capabilities. I mean the main idea that I think the guys from Bitwig had when they left ableton was to have a totally integrated system
without grafting on Max, AAS instruments etc. So an integrated midi system in the Grid makes total sense.

Hey, thanks for that suggestion! I'd made the assumption that it was more just a simple up-down arp when holding a chord - didn't know it had a little sequencer it it. Will have to explore that further.perpetual3 wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 3:23 pmYou can probably build something using the arpeggiator in a note selector device._leras wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 12:15 pm I would just like a simple sequencer, with the things like groove/shuffle etc. Where you can trigger it from a note, so you can play a sequence with a note press and transpose it depending on the pitch of the note you play. i.e. so you can program a diy fixed/custom pattern

Ideally I'd have something where I can just take e.g. an existing midi clip to be triggered - but I think I can get a lot more fun out of this arp than I had thought!
