Well...........

For me, it's far less about "genre" and more about "specific elements"

I can't stand the sound of most rap. Not all of it, but most of it sounds like a guy mumbling into a microphone of woman/money/sex. It's far less original than rock n rollers (I don't remember any rockers talking about tattooing a womans crack)

I hate autotune. So, if an EDM tune uses autotune, I'm not going to like it. However, if it doesn't use autotune, I might actually like it. (see below)

Side chaining makes me seasick. Literally and figuratively. So, if the EDM doesn't have sidechain OMG IMA vomit and no autotune, then I pass it off as harmless and bob my head :)

If rap has autotune, then it's really on my EWWWWW GOD MAKE IT STOP list.

And if it has sidechain autotune token rap.......then.......well you know.

Not that I can do better. I can't. I love to make music and I love to discuss (when it's actually discussion) about the subject. But those 3 things ruin anything for me.

Even if it had sweep picking :hihi:

I think at this point we'd do better to give audio examples. There are a couple or three things which I've been exposed to here that is just a harbinger of total cultural doom to my view.
I could try and write about it but I tire easily of trying to describe music in words. One aspect is a godawful approach to synthesizers with a supersuperdupersaw that I don't want to hear 10 miliseconds of ever in my life again, the whole thing is just so insanely hyped, and lacking in musicality like nothing ever before in music, to me.

EDM, again, it's not my lifestyle in any way. So normally, I'd be disinterested. It began to get onto my skin as it started to bleed into everyday life such as getting breakfast at the Jack in the Box, pop music that is copying some type of EDM is piped in and it's physically unpleasant. Not different really than people in cars with aggressive bass that's hideous. You know that one white guy killed somebody behind that.
I'm not one to go on about music I don't like because I think if people get off on it and it eases their burden in life, it's a good thing. But more and more exposure to people pushing it has affected me in the last couple yrs.

I didn't, but thanks! Most of my post are levity oriented :)

I know you are joking, but you're closer than you think!
I think this statement has no reality at all. Is it a comment on, or does it follow jonsolo's strawman, the person that makes music only they appreciate?
Who is 'KVR'? Is the group all one and the same guy? Can there never be rubbish in one person's view? Nolan and I come from pretty different places and I think I know pretty much what he referred to, though.

@ hibidy

Wait, what's wrong with side-chaining compression?

Is it how it sounds in of itself or how and how often people use it? (ive noticed it being very popular among some crowds as I've researched techniques).

Please no more of the strawman thing. I don't see anything strawman about it at all. I see it as a difference of opinion.

Jan, you generally are a pretty smart cookie and clearly have more technical skills than I, but you DO seem like you are looking for a fight in these types of threads.

It's not sidechaining in of itself, but that SEASICK sidechain/pump thing that is very common in EDM and I'm not joking about the seasick thing. It's really overdone in many instances.

I kid you not. There is a Jr HS that has the LOUDEST EDM playing at BB games and in their quad right down the street. It's literally sickening to walk by when that is going on. I'd do better as a passenger in the back seat of a car going over the Sierras

I've always seen that "pumping" feeling of it as meaning that the settings are not right, since it's supposed to move instruments just enough out of the way not shove them away an entire half beat before the other one even hits. It always gives me this sensation of a weird change in air/sound pressure but it doesn't make me feel sick; I assume that's what you mean about sea sick?

Post

Well, we might be getting into something that is subjective. For me, that pumping effect is ON PURPOSE and I don't like it.......partially for physical reasons. If it didn't literally make me woozy, I wouldn't care. If you know what I mean........

I get that, I'm just saying that I'm somewhat unsure of why they think it sounds good in 95% cases (in the other 5% maybe if something else fills that empty space or it's done subtly). It's kind of like how a lot of people like a super saw in.every.god damn.song. until it becomes a cliche'. In of it's self it's kind of cool/nice but after I've heard it in a few songs in a row I get sick of it, it's like a sea of saws after that.

With that type of thing (super saw) I guess it's kind of like eggnog, it can be good or amazing in moderation at the right times, but will just cause you a very unpleasant if in excess (lots of dairy and eggs is a good way to get sick). It would be kind of like if an entire song was made of the hoover sound *shudders* Actually if that was done as satire I might like it just for the lulz factor of linking it to people and as an oddity. [joke]*begins work on super evil hoover-only song*[/joke]

Post

I think that is what I'm saying. In excess, it's not pleasant.

Again, not that I'm some frigging expert that needs to tell people what they should/shouldn't listen to or do, just what sends up a red flag for me.

I actually quite enjoy it. But then again, I'm quite petty sometimes. I've also done my best to be be as least involved with this thread as I can be outside of the OP....and one towards the middle because I thought we were going to have that stupid argument again (that I won't even mention out of fear I might start it)

Typical. Click.

whatever happened to the old cliché of 'we make music for ourselves and if anyone else likes it it's a bonus'? :D

I don't know why that would be any type of problem. Other than a couple of yahoos, I thought most of it was a discussion with some differences of opinion???
