Can your host do THIS?

braving the possibility of flaring up some controversy, I move ahead with my opinion.
there seeme to be a lot of great options for audio based host, Tracktion and now Ableton Live 4 and from the folks I know who use Sonar they got into it (way back whan) because of its audio recording/handling etc.
but there's a considerable gap when it comes to midi editing/handling manipulation. so given that i personally don't record audio or work in audio (or audio loops much either), despite the appeal of the simplicity of Tracktion and Ableton 4, I use Project 5.
Like any host it has its detractors and supporters. But as far as midi handling/editing etc., I don't think there's any host that comes close. Obviously that doesn't appeal to a lot of audio based recording home musicians, but I don't understand why more people who occasionally want good midi capabilities don't rewire P-5 into their host. A certain number of Sonar users do this. And that in itself seems to have limited or defined Cake's marketing definition of P-5 (for instance no freeze in P-5, but bounce to track in Sonar) (and given P-5's higher than average cpu consumption it's one of those gaps that seems to need filling)
P-5 uses the same model as Tracktion of one synth one track. It would seem to me to Rewire into Tracktion and fill the gaps in that host. Maybe the price points make that less appealing than I think.
I'd do it, but using FLStudio and energyXT as a vst inside P-5 I've got more than I need to fool with.
so i'm out. I do midi. I use P-5. I think it does it well.

Totally agreeing with you!spaceman wrote:headquest wrote: But later never came, because I got heavily into Reason as a Rewire slave within Tracktion... and so did my students...![]()
I think that's one of the mayor contributions of the rewire protocol.. it enables you to combine two products so that you can replace the 'bad' functionality from one app with functionality of the other app thus building, in my eyes, a new and improved application
like what shane mentioned in a post today, using the good parts of FL (the synths etc..) while using the midi tools from Sonar.. same goes for tracktion + reason.. very powerful combinations and there's enough of them to suit your way of working
And it's a good idea - once you find 2 or 3 programmes you get along with, and which complement each other well - to stick with them and go deeper.
Then you get to concentrate more on the music and not just the technology side/learning curve.
THen again, sometimes you get stale and do need a change. I think that happened with me in Cubase, and using the Tracktion/Reason combo has revitalised my creative workflow, which is quite exciting (for me - you might not care less!!
Maybe you're thinking of selling Sonar for the same reasons.. good luck and happy music making, either way!

yeah, easy to get boxed in to one POV..I learned however that if one simply allows oneself to do the occasional ameture modeling session in random crack hotels throughout America, that the creative process is usually wide open after that:

I'm a changed man now.

You got to be kidding?wrench45us wrote:braving the possibility of flaring up some controversy, I move ahead with my opinion.
An interesting opinion though - I've not heard from many (any?) P5 users, and I was beginning to wonder if it had flopped ... obviously not, though.
I kind of thought that P5 was designed pretty much just for Sonar users, and hadn't considered it as a Rewire slave within Tracktion.
So I'm off to seek out a demo pronto, and will let you know how I get on. A better MIDI editing environment would be really welcome (and I noticed in reviews that the pattern sequencer in P5 looks very lush!)
Thanks for the tip...

No reviews on KVR for Project 5, but regarding price, it's been knocked down to just £129 on digitalvillage.co.uk website in UK - sounds like it could be a good deal...wrench45us wrote:braving the possibility of flaring up some controversy, I move ahead with my opinion.

for anyone so motivated to try out the P-5 demo, or even before trying out the demo, there are a number of good video tutorials up on www.project5.com
based on the 1.5 version
they're done well enough that I wish they served as models for other hosts to offer the same sort of thing. they don't take long to run through and do a nice job of revealing basic and more advanced features.
i've only run them on broadband, not downlaoded as a whole, but streamed one by one. I'm not sure how they'd work on dial-up
