What's the deal with giving out Tracktion for free?

AIUI though, that was one man, not a company the size of Mackie.

Hey All,
You've got questions; I've got answers.
Why are you giving away Tracktion to everyone who wants it?
We would like to see more people using Tracktion. With Version 2 on the horizon, we would like to build more interest in Tracktion before it is released. Tracktion is unique and the best way to promote it is to let people experience it first hand.
I paid for tracktion, why do these people get it for free?
We have started a large promotional effort to get more people using Tracktion before version 2 is released. In the coming months you will see some changes on the Tracktion website (including some sneak peeks into Tracktion V2), some new ads and new promotions.
Do these free NFR copies have the same upgrade paths as the real Tracktion 1 copies?
No. These free NFRs are tracked separate than the purchased and bundled versions of Tracktion.
For all of you faithful, long-time followers who paid for Tracktion 1, don't fear. We will be extending special treatment to you regarding V2. We will have more detailed info about this for you soon. But for now, rest assured, we will take good care of you.
Also, please know that we are not cheating Jules at all with this or any other offer. We like him too much.
If you have any other questions, please let me know and I will do my best to get you an answer.

Why did Makie not send out news to customers about the changes? what is meant by 'look after' as a percentage?
How much more as a percentage does T2 cost new and old users, over T1?
What does the change in the website have to do with NFR's and T1?
Also thank you for entering the thread and putting some peace of mind to the topic.
Best regards,
Spe3d

I don't think he is trying to say it does. I think the point here is that Mackie are trying to let us know that they take Tracktion seriously and are embarking on a large promotion drive.Spe3D wrote: What does the change in the website have to do with NFR's and T1?
Not directed at you now spe3d, just the world in general:
There's been enough sniping and whinging round here that Mackie haven't done anything to help Tracktion, so finally they get the clue, start doing exactly what people are asking for, and then we start sniping and bitching about that.
Clearly this shows that the groundhogging will soon be a thing of the past, so we should be happy.
Clearly this shows that Mackie are thinking seriously about how to grow Tracktion's userbase and keep the product viable, and we should be happy.
Clearly this shows that Mackie at least believe that T2 is going to be a great product that they believe in, and I for one am happy.

Boxed version can't be too much lower than that or there'll be no profit at all.koolkeys wrote: It says $149 value. WHAT? I paid $80, as everyone else did. And if you think about it, it says 149, not 150. Typical market pricing strategy. Even Jules didn't do this. He said $80. So Mackie may be telling us something here. Hmmmmm, maybe the new cost of T2? It sounds about like many think it will cost. You don't get a typo like that in a banner. Just a thought.

Ok! valley, I have made my points and I can see that Mackie have posted a response to the userbase.valley wrote:

My last message is - keep the customers you have happy before getting new ones (this is done in part by keeping existing users updated with info before big hits like the one today, please)
That is the last post on this from me now - me all cool and its out of my system.

Beno, thank you so much for coming forward with this information! Hopefully this will stop the silly grumbling amongst the T1 troops. I think the strategy is brilliant...build the buzz to a fevered pitch with T1 NFR, then ka-boom with T2. I'm a paid T1 customer, I have ZERO problems with this. I want nothing less than success and longevity for Tracktion, and if the NFR giveaway strategy helps to ensure that, then I'm all for it.Beno wrote:Hey All, You've got questions; I've got answers.
Hrrm..."coming months" sounds like NAMM 2005 to me. I checked theNAMMshow.com: yep, November 19 was the deadline for Final Payment, Booth Cancellations, and Publication Bin Requests. So my hunch is that Mackie are now locked into T2 release by Jan 20, and with any luck we will see T2 beta download by Christmas...or maybe even sooner.....Ode to Joy!In the coming months you will see some changes on the Tracktion website (including some sneak peeks into Tracktion V2), some new ads and new promotions.

One thing's for sure from what Beno said, T2 is at least "months" away. Looks like it won't be quite ready for a Feb. 2 release.
Glad to see that this is legit and no problem to grab extra copies. It just seemed from the listing that it was meant only for people who had come from certain places (magazines, trade shows, etc.).

Why the hell should I hang around waiting for an upgrade to software I paid for a few weeks back, which is now being given away? Bollocks - FL5 will be a free upgrade to loyal customers. Image Line have their critics, but at least you don't get mugged like you do round here...

As a paying customer of T1, I also have no problem with Mackie's strategy. Look at it this way: T2 has to be a *significant* upgrade for them to even consider giving away T1 for free. I imagine we will see lots of groovy new features - and that my friends, rocks!

I think it's a great marketing decision...and I happily downloaded my NFR copy, ...I've been "on the fence" about getting Tracktion since I have my hands full with a few good hosts already. I've always tried to find reasons not to like it, but maybe this will give me a chance to get hooked.
Thank you Jules, Beno & the rest of Mackie...and also the rest of the loyal paying userbase that didn't lose their cool
