Welp...I've tried, I think, 4 Martins with Micarta fretboards. None of them felt natural, there was a kind of drag moving up and down the neck, notes were pinched, even though the frets were properly dressed. As well, I've tried a few Hagstroms, owned a Super Swede. That was better than the Micarta, but I still didn't like it as much as real wood. My pref is ebony, then rosewood, then maple, I guess. The Noodlist wrote: Sat Oct 28, 2023 7:11 pmCare to elaborate?
I noticed maple was brighter than rosewood, purpleheart not so much.
What guitar gear have you bought/are you buying/will you buy?

I went a tad mental this year when I found out you could get a lot of nice guitars at the $500 price range, and got myself a few guitars I normally would never consider buying, perhaps apart from the Squire Bass VI as I needed a bass. These included a Squire Jaguar, Squire Jazzmaster Contemporary, Squire Stratocaster Contemporary, an Aria Pro II Fullerton and a Yamaha Pacifica. I also got two guitars for modding, an Ibanez GIO RG and a Jackson JS22Q-7, more in my usual lane. Pretty much quantity over quality, apart from the fancy inlays and woodwork on my SL7Q Pro, I can't tell the neck on the Ibanez GIO RG and my SL7Q Pro apart though

Might not be directly guitar gear, but it could be in the capture chain.
Mulling over a SSL Pure Drive QUAD as a mic/interface investment.
Maybe not.

Surely, It has to be good at capturing amps and acoustic guitars, it's an SSL preamp(s).
An audio interface with Hi-Z/DI instrument inputs and inserts, and could be used for bus summing, any thoughts?

I'm not seeing anything on their website or the forums about summing. I do see that the audio can be run back into it through USB, which is very cool. The Noodlist wrote: Wed Nov 01, 2023 3:29 pm An audio interface with Hi-Z/DI instrument inputs and inserts, and could be used for bus summing, any thoughts?

I meant 2 bus and stems, DAW out into the line ins. It does mention adding warmth to stems on the product page. I'm sure it could be patched in as external hardware through the likes of Studio One's Pipeline.Uncle E wrote: Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:57 pmI'm not seeing anything on their website or the forums about summing. Yes, that makes sense. You can get a passive summer for cheap these days or even make your own (takes about 30 minutes to solder up, it's just resistors). And you can even use the SSL to do all of the conversion. Pretty cool! The Noodlist wrote: Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:13 pm I meant 2 bus and stems, DAW out into the line ins. I'm sure your idea of summing is 8 tracks or more, especially with the passive summing.Uncle E wrote: Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:18 pmYes, that makes sense. It's bass, so not *exactly* Guitar, but I just bought another Yamaha BB734A. I should never have sold the first one, one of the best production basses for under $2k. Time to get my Peter Hook on

Bought a 434 a couple months ago on a whim because I was so impressed with my Yamaha acoustic I spent around $900 on. It's really crazy how much of a sleeper brand they are for price to qc.

Looks interesting. I have an Ibanez GSR200 which is a similar active bass with a cross between P and Jazz style pickups. I like that it’s light, but would prefer a better neck and sound. Some of these 734s are going on eBay around £600 so surprisingly affordable.

Yeah they are a sleeper, but are definitely pro grade. Both of mine have been roughly MIA Fender levels of quality - better made than my MIJ Fender P-Bass, in fact.
Peter Hook and his son swear by them:
If it's good enough for Peter Hook or for the Smashing Pumpkins, it's good enough for me

The Yamaha Les Paul's from the early 80's are pretty great. The higher end models are basically the same guitars as the SG-2000's Carlos Santana used to play, only shaped like Les Paul's. A Lord Player for under $500 would be a good find if you like that tone.

Yeah their SG from back then was awesome too.
Gotta say the current Revstar's are top notch too. My RSS20 blew away my MIJ Fender Tele in fit and finish... and my Tele was awesome.
I've actually sold both of my Fenders and gone pure Yamaha. They are simply better IMO. I realize that's a bold statement to make online
