I think I may have changed my stance on dongles

After a nightmare week where where my computer crashed beyond redemption, I found my self with the unenviable task of having to reinstall all my software.

I have been trying to get a new Komplete keyfile from Native Instruments for the last 5 days, when I contacted support, after three days they suggested that I request a new keyfile - funnily enough the support request I sent them was requesting a new keyfile. I have now had to send another support request asking for new key file as my original request for a new key file had not been satisfactorily met. As it is Friday I am unlikey to get a response until Monday, leaving me without this software for over a week.

I then tried to install Sampletank 2XL and Sonik Synth 2. This went quite smoothly, although I was informed that I had used all three of my authorisations and any further ones would need to be requested via email. I then noticed a problem with the irq on my soundcard so I move it to a new PCI slot - amazingly this has caused all my IK software to become unauthorised. I go to the website and I have to request more authorisations via a support request. I have had Sampletank2XL since it has been relased and have only had 3 authorisations since that time hardly the work of somebody who is installing the software and all their friends computers.

I am not a massive fan of dongles - my preference is for serial numbers, hence why main sequencer is Sonar. However, in light of the nightmare of above, if a company is going to use draconian protection measures, I think I would rather use a dongle now.

HI

I spoke to 2 developers yesterday concerning 'their' C/R protection - I stated I would not be purchasing their products - I had a civilized communication with them and who knows - they might change their system?

I dislike dongles unless they are like the old Logic one that required little or no other software in the background - but I would not buy any software again that requires a dongle.

I have SXV3 and was 'shut out' of using it for a wholeday recently and on numerous occassions have had to reboot my DAW to get the dongle recognized.

As the man say's 'you vote with your wallet' - give me a code number and I am happy - even my NI stuff which I love will go if they try 'dongling it up' in the future.

Flipper.

I don't understand why contratactors/companies can't make a 'thru M/F dongle'? Have the info embedded in the shielding, as they would a regular dongle, but allow for a input on the end as well. If you use a laptop live/sessions, this would be a invaluable bonus I'd imagine? One could bring 2 NI dongles and a M-Audio USB A/D box - and only use ONE USB PORT! :o

Even better, hot swappable i1394 Thru Dongles with 2 Female inputs on either side of the dongle...?

Is it a hub? Is it a dongle?
It's a damn good idea! :hihi:

All Rights Reserved/Patent Pend. ;)

Yeah that should be possible seeing how Logic had a pass-through dongle at version 3 (around 1997). :o
All Rights Reserved/Patent Pend. Wink
Sorry. Maybe a dongle-hub-mug warmer???
And all life's fears
Can invade my ears
I can handle it

You completely overlook a simpler (and better) solution.

Had you purchased Ghost or Drive Image, and imaged your system before the flakiness began, you could have restored to that state in just minutes.

No problems, no dongles, no headache.

Unless you like reinstalling your software and being at the mercy of the developers for authorizations...

I'm not mocking you, really, just pointing out there's a relatively inexpensive tool that can easily bring you back from any software problem. Do yourself a huge favor and look into these programs.
